Horace Grant signs as a free agent with the Magic, leaving behind a Bulls team with whom he won three championships but parted under acrimonious terms. Bulls management had accused Grant of faking injuries during the ’93-’94 season, pushing the All-Star power forward towards a five year, $17 million contract with Orlando. In the subsequent postseason, Grant helps his new team eliminate his old one in the Conference Semifinals.

Sidney Wicks is born in Contra Costa County, California. In 2021, he was inducted into the Southern California Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments at Hamilton High School and at UCLA.

The Soviet Union defeats Yugoslavia 69-64 in the EuroBasket Final in Essen, West Germany, clinching an unprecedented eighth consecutive title. Kresimir Cosic of the Yugoslavian team is named tournament MVP. Italy defeats Poland in the third place game.

Raja Bell is born in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2001, he became the third Virgin Islander in NBA history, following Charles Claxton and Tim Duncan.

Carl Landry is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played only light minutes at Harold S. Vincent High School, but was part of two Wisconsin state title teams.

The women’s tournament gets underway at the Seoul Olympics and for the first time, the format starts with a group stage. Teresa Edwards (24 points) and Katrina McClain (19 points, eight rebounds) lead the United States to an 87-81 victory over Czechoslovakia, while the Soviet Union defeats Bulgaria 91-62.

Dejounte Murray is born in Seattle, Washington. He was named Washington “Mr. Basketball” in 2015 and led Rainier High School to three Washington state titles.

South Korea defeats Japan 78-76 in the FIBA Asia Cup final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Koreans had previously pulled off a semifinals upset over five-time defending champion China, who recovered with a 94-68 victory over host Saudi Arabia in the bronze medal game. The United States men’s team defeats Italy 93-61 in a group stage match-up at the Olympics in Sydney. Vince Carter leads the U.S. with 13 points.
