Dominique Wilkins is traded from the Hawks to the Clippers, along with a first round pick, in exchange for Danny Manning. It ends an 11 year run for Wilkins in Atlanta, in which he became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Manning, a two-time All-Star and #1 overall pick, had been on the market all season after informing the Clippers he would not re-sign with them when his contract ended in 1995.

Eddie L. Johnson is born in Ocala, Florida. He was part of the first class of Black students at the previously all-white Weirsdale High School.

Wilt Chamberlain sets the NBA record for field goal attempts without a miss in a single game, shooting 18-for-18 (and finishing with 42 points) in a 149-118 76ers win over the Bullets.

Kevin Porter sets the NBA record for assists in a game with 29 in a 126-112 Nets victory over the Rockets. It broke the mark that had been held by Bob Cousy for 19 years and would stand for 11 years before getting broken by Scott Skiles.

In one of the strangest and most infamous games in the legendary Duke-North Carolina rivalry, the Blue Devils hold UNC scoreless in the first half, en route to a 47-40 victory. Dean Smith’s team deployed his patented four corners offense but missed every field goal they attempted in the first half, leading to a 7-0 halftime lead for Duke.
