1999

Visual Concepts and Sega release NBA 2K, the first in a now yearly series of NBA video games. Allen Iverson is the original cover athlete and the highest rated player, at a 97 overall. By the end of the decade, the NBA 2K series was regularly outselling its top competitor, EA Sports’ NBA Live.


1937

Rudy LaRusso is born in Brooklyn, New York. He was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.

1951

Kevin Kunnert is born in Dubuque, Iowa. He starred at Wahlert High School and at University of Iowa and was inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

1977

Truck Robinson sets the Jazz single game franchise record with 27 rebounds in a 123-107 loss to the Lakers. His record would stand for 43 years before getting broken by Rudy Gobert.

1980

Billy Knight sets the Pacers single game franchise record with 52 points in a 119-113 victory over the Spurs. The record would stand for 12 years before getting broken by Reggie Miller.

1984

NCAA champion Hilton Armstrong is born in Peekskill, New York.

1993

The New Jersey Nets posthumously retire the #3 jersey of Drazen Petrovic, who had been killed in a car accident five months prior.

1997

Tariq Abdul-Wahad becomes the first French player in NBA history, scoring two points in nine minutes in a Kings loss to the Heat.

2002

Azzi Fudd is born in Arlington, Virginia. She is named after Jennifer Azzi and both of her parents played college basketball in Washington, D.C., mom Katie at Georgetown and dad Tim at American University.

2006

Michael Redd breaks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 35-year-old Bucks single game franchise record with 57 points in a 113-11 loss to the Jazz. Redd’s record would stand for 17 years before getting broken by Giannis Antetokounmpo.

2014

Dirk Nowitzki becomes the NBA’s all-time leading scorer amongst non-American players with his 26,947th point to surpass Hakeem Olajuwon.
