The Washington Mystics clinch their first ever title with an 89-78 victory over the Connecticut Sun in the winner-take-all game five of the WNBA Finals. Elena Delle Donne finishes with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Emma Meesseman scores 22 points off the bench and is an unlikely Finals MVP.


1953

Gus Williams is born in Mount Vernon, New York. He was named New York State Player of the Year in 1971 while starring for Mount Vernon High School.

1966

Derrick McKey is born in Meridian, Mississippi. He recently began a tradition of organizing an annual charity golf tournament in his hometown, with proceeds benefitting a local youth basketball camp.

1972

Yinka Dare is born in Kano, Nigeria. A tennis player in his youth, Dare didn’t take up basketball until age 17, when he was discovered at random by a Nigerian-American lawyer, who brought Dare to the U.S. to join a junior college team

1977

Walt Frazier is traded from the Knicks to the Cavaliers in exchange for Jim Cleamons.

1979

Joel Przybilla is born in Monticello, Minnesota. He was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball in 1998.

1983

Norm Nixon is traded from the Lakers to the Clippers, along with Eddie Jordan and a second round pick, in exchange for Swen Nater and Byron Scott.

1984

NBA veteran Ryan Hollins is born in Pasadena, California.

1987

Phil Jackson is hired as an assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls under Doug Collins. Jackson had spent the prior five years coaching the Albany Patroons of the CBA. He replaces Gene Little, who left to take a front office job with the impending Charlotte expansion franchise.

1991

Michael Carter-Williams is born in Hamilton, Massachusetts. Despite standing just 5’9″ at the time, he was the leading scorer in his freshman year at Hamilton High School.

2002

Josh Giddey is born in Melbourne, Australia. His father Warrick and mother Kim were both professional basketball players in their native Australia.

2013

The Minnesota Lynx finish a dominant sweep of the WNBA playoffs (a perfect 7-0 record) with an 86-77 victory over the Atlanta Dream in game three of the WNBA Finals. Maya Moore leads the Lynx with 23 points and is named Finals MVP.
