The first ever FIBA World Championships for Women gets underway in Santiago, Chile, with France defeating Peru 62-22 in the opening match. 10 teams participate, mostly from the Americas. The United States played its first game one day later, defeating Paraguay 60-28, and eventually won the inaugural title.
1922
Andy Phillip is born in Granite City, Illinois. He led Granite City High School to the 1940 Illinois state title.
1969
Wilt Chamberlain breaks George Mikan’s Lakers single game franchise record with 42 rebounds in a 105-99 overtime victory over the Celtics. It also marks the 14th and final time in his career that Chamberlain nabs 40 or more rebounds in a game, which is the NBA record (Bill Russell is second with eight games).
1974
The New Orleans Jazz are officially announced as an NBA expansion franchise for the ’74-’75 season.
1984
Alexander “Sasha” Vujacic is born in Maribor, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). His mother Ksenija was a star pro volleyball player but retired when Sasha was born.
2001
Kevin Johnson has his #7 jersey retired by the Suns during a pre-game ceremony in Phoenix.
2015
Bob Dandridge has his jersey #10 retired by the Bucks. A three-time All-Star for Milwaukee, Dandridge was a key part of the 1971 title team.
2017
Russell Westbrook ties Fred Brown’s Thunder (and SuperSonics) single game franchise record with 58 points in a 126-121 loss to the Trail Blazers.
2023
Pau Gasol has his jersey #16 retired by the Lakers. It’s an emotional ceremony, with Vanessa Bryant on hand to see Gasol’s jersey raised to the rafters in between the #8 and #24 retired in honor of his friend and teammate, Kobe Bryant.
