1993

Shortly before his untimely death from cancer at age 47, former championship-winning NC State coach Jim Valvano gives an inspiring speech at the ESPY awards show on ESPN, announcing the V Foundation for Cancer Research and imploring viewers “don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”


1945

Gary Williams is born in Collingswood, New Jersey. His coaching career began in his home state, as he led Wilson High School in Camden to the 1971 New Jersey state title.

1955

The Hawks play their final home game in Milwaukee, a 99-96 loss to the Syracuse Nationals. In the ensuing offseason, the Hawks re-locate from Milwaukee to St. Louis.

1966

Kevin Johnson is born in Sacramento, California. He later served as the 55th mayor of his hometown, elected in 2008.

1969

Adrian Wojnarowski is born in Bristol, Connecticut. He began his career in journalism by working for the Hartford Courant while attending Bristol Central High School.

1972

Rick Roberson sets the Cavaliers single game franchise record with 25 rebounds in a 130-123 victory over the Rockets. It was a career high for Roberson, a journeyman center, and has been since equalled only once, by Anderson Varejao in 2014.

1979

Trenton Hassell is born in Clarksville, Tennessee. He was teammates with Shawn Marion at Clarksville High School.

1981

CBS is granted exclusive rights to broadcasting the NCAA Tournament, starting in 1982. It was initially a three year deal but has been extended multiple times, most recently through 2032.

1984

Michael Jordan’s final home game for North Carolina is a memorable one, as the Tar Heels finished off an undefeated ACC season with a 96-83 double overtime victory over rival Duke. Jordan leads all scorers in the game with 25 points.

The roof collapses at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit due to damage suffered during a snowstorm. It forces the Pistons to play out the remainder of the ’83-’84 season at the Joe Louis Arena, and inspires their ownership group to fund a new arena, which eventually opens in 1988 as the Palace of Auburn Hills.

1990

Draymond Green is born in Saginaw, Michigan. He led Saginaw High School to back-to-back Michigan state titles in 2007 and 2008.

Loyola Marymount’s Hank Gathers collapses on the court during a West Coast Conference Tournament game against Portland. He is soon after pronounced dead at age 23 due to heart failure, caused by the disorder hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

1992

Jared Sullinger is born in Columbus, Ohio. He was named Ohio Mr. Basketball twice while starring at Northland High School.

Dennis Rodman sets the Pistons single game franchise record with 34 rebounds in a 110-107 overtime victory over the Pacers. It breaks Bob Lanier’s record of 33, which had stood for 20 years.

1994

Michael Jordan makes his Major League Baseball debut, appearing as a pinch hitter in a White Sox spring training game against the Rangers, grounding out in his one at-bat. Jordan would never play a regular season game with the White Sox, instead spending the entire 1994 season with the minor league (AA) Birmingham Barons.

1998

Obi Toppin is born in Brooklyn, New York. His father Obadiah was legendary street ball player in the city, and played a few seasons of pro and semi-pro ball.
