1992

Rudy Tomjanovich is promoted to head coach of the Rockets, replacing the fired Don Chaney. Tomjanovich had spent his entire playing career, 11 seasons, with the Rockets, then spent time as a scout and assistant coach before taking over the top job. He would soon after lead the franchise to back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995 and eventually set the franchise record for coaching wins, with 503.


1952

Maurice Lucas is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He led Schenley High School to a Pennsylvania state title in 1970.

1961

Bob Pettit sets the Hawks single game franchise record with a career high 57 points (along with 28 rebounds) in a 141-138 victory over the Pistons. Pettit’s record mark was tied by Dominique Wilkins in 1988 but has not been surpassed.

1981

Andrei Kirilenko is born in Izhevsk, Russia (then the Soviet Union). He was Russia’s flag bearer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, then led the Russian team to a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

1983

Jason Maxiell is born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother relocated the family to Texas for a fresh start when Jason was 12 years old.

In an arbitrary accomplishment during one of the all-time greatest individual NBA seasons, Moses Malone scores the 4,000,000th point in NBA history, during a 127-98 76ers victory over the Rockets.

1984

Bill Bradley has his jersey #24 retired by the Knicks. Bradley, who had just been inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame one year prior, spent his entire 10-year career with New York, making one All-Star team and winning two championships.

1986

Alvin Robertson becomes just the second player in NBA history to record a quadruple-double, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals in a Spurs win over the Suns. Robertson is the only non-center to ever record a quadruple-double, and the only player ever to do so with 10+ steals.

1987

Maurice Cheeks becomes the NBA’s all-time steals leader, with his 1,622nd steal during a 76ers win over the Warriors to surpass Gus Williams’ career mark. Cheeks would hold the record for 10 years until it was broken by John Stockton.

1989

Mike Schuler is fired as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and replaced by Rick Adelman, who soon after leads the team to two NBA Finals appearances.

1993

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is born in Thomaston, Georgia. After winning the 2023 NBA title with the Nuggets, he returned to his hometown with the trophy for a celebratory parade.

1995

During a Jazz win over the Celtics, John Stockton becomes the first player in NBA history to compile 10,000 career assists. He would eventually become the all-time NBA leader in the category with 15,806, while only six additional players have reached the 10,000 assist plateau.

1998

In one of numerous head-scratching personnel decisions by coach and team president Rick Pitino, the Celtics trade promising rookie Chauncey Billups, along with former Slam Dunk champion Dee Brown to the Raptors in exchange for Kenny Anderson, Popeye Jones, and Zan Tabak.

2001

Jamie Jaquez, Jr. is born in Irvine, California. He was a third generation college basketball player, following his grandfather at Northern Arizona University and both his parents at Concordia University.

2007

The NBA All-Star Game takes place in a non-NBA city for the first time, with the Western Conference defeating the East 153-132 in Las Vegas. Kobe Bryant is named MVP for the second of four times in his career, while Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony make their All-Star debuts.

2013

Jerry Buss passes away at age 80, ending a 33-year run as owner of the Lakers. The franchise is passed on to his seven children, with daughter Jeannie taking over as team governor.
