1994

Scottie Pippen makes his mark with Michael Jordan retired, earning All-Star MVP with a 29-point performance in a 127-118 Eastern Conference win in Minneapolis. This game was also notable as the first of nine All-Star appearances for Gary Payton, and the first and only All-Star appearance in the careers of B.J. Armstrong, Charles Oakley, Derrick Coleman, Kenny Anderson, John Starks, Clifford Robinson, and Horace Grant.


1947

Mike Krzyzewski is born in Chicago, Illinois. The son of Polish immigrants, his name’s proper spelling and pronunciation has remained a point of confusion for decades.

1954

Furman’s Frank Selvy becomes the first and only NCAA Division I player to score 100 points in a game, in a win over Newbury College.

1959

George Yardley is traded from the Pistons to the Syracuse Nationals in exchange for Ed Conlin. The trade supposedly happened at the behest of Pistons owner Fred Zollner’s new girlfriend, who did not care for Yardley.

1968

In a Bullets loss to the Lakers, Earl Monroe finishes with 56 points, the third highest total ever by an NBA rookie, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 58 and Rick Barry’s 57.

1977

In the first post-merger NBA All-Star Game (which is also the first to take place on a Sunday), former ABA star Julius Erving is named MVP despite his Eastern Conference team losing to the West, 125-124 in Milwaukee. George Gervin and David Thompson are also amongst the 10 former ABA players who make their NBA All-Star debuts.

1981

Luke Ridnour is born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His father Rob was his coach at Blaine High School in Washington.

1983

Julius Erving earns MVP honors for the second time, leading the East to a 132-123 victory over the Western Conference at the NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Magic Johnson finishes with 16 assists, breaking the single game record that Oscar Robertson had held since 1962.

1985

Isiah Thomas ties Kevin Porter’s Pistons single game franchise record with 25 assists in a 124-119 victory over the Mavericks.

1987

The Lakers acquire Mychal Thompson from the Spurs at the trade deadline in exchange for Frank Brickowski, Petur Gudmondsson, a first round pick, and a second round pick.

1994

Following a Massachusetts win over Temple, John Calipari has his postgame press conference interrupted by opposing coach John Chaney, who threatens to murder Calipari over alleged meddling with the officials during the game.

1995

University of Connecticut becomes the first school to ever have its men’s and women’s teams ranked #1 overall in the AP poll at the same time.

2000

Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan share MVP honors as the Western Conference defeats the East 137-126 in the NBA All-Star Game in Oakland. O’Neal goes on to become just the third player in league history, after Willis Reed and Michael Jordan, to earn All-Star MVP, league MVP, and Finals MVP all in the same season. Nine players make their All-Star debuts including Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, and Vince Carter, while John Stockton appears for the 10th and final time.
