Jerry Sloan retires under unusual circumstances; John Amaechi breaks new ground; Paul Pierce is honored by the Celtics

2011

Jerry Sloan makes a surprise announcement that he is stepping down mid-season as head coach of the Jazz, ending a tenure that included 1,127 career wins and two NBA Finals appearances over 23 years. He is replaced by his former player Tyrone Corbin. Both Sloan and star point guard Deron Williams deny rumors that the coach’s departure was due to conflicts between the two. Sloan returned to the organization two years later as a consultant.


1949

James Silas is born in Tallulah, Louisiana. A legend at McCall High School, he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

1952

Paul Arizin is named MVP as the Eastern Conference defeats the West 108-91 at the NBA All-Star Game in Boston. Arizin leads all scorers with 26 points while Bob Cousy dishes out 13 assists, setting an All-Star Game record that would stand for almost a decade.

1975

Jacque Vaughn is born in Los Angeles, California. While starring for John Muir High School in nearby Pasadena, he was granted the Dial Award as the best high school scholar-athlete in the country across any sport.

1976

Tony Battie is born in Dallas, Texas. He led South Oak Cliff High School to the Texas state title in 1993.

1990

Magic Johnson is named MVP of the All-Star Game in Miami but Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley lead the Eastern Conference to a 130-113 victory over the West. Larry Bird makes his 10th and final All-Star appearance (he would be voted in by fans in 1991 and 1992 but not appear due to injury), while Reggie Miller, Scottie Pippen, and a rookie David Robinson make their debuts.

1991

Nikola Mirotic is born in Podgorica, Montenegro (then Yugoslavia). A soccer player in his youth, he picked up organized basketball at the age of 13.

1994

The NBA and province of Ontario come to an agreement on a sports gambling dispute that had jeopardized the formation of the Raptors franchise. The NBA had awarded the Raptors to Toronto with a condition that the Ontario lottery could no longer allow betting on basketball. Ontario initially refused, forcing the NBA and Raptors ownership to negotiate a settlement.

1996

Recently un-retired Michael Jordan earns All-Star MVP honors in a 129-118 Eastern Conference victory over the West in San Antonio. Jason Kidd finishes with 10 assists in his All-Star debut.

2001

Trailing by 21 points with just nine minutes left in the game, the Eastern Conference makes a wild comeback to defeat the West 111-110 in the NBA All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. Stephon Marbury hits the game-winning shot and Allen Iverson leads all scorers with 25 points and is named MVP. Tracy McGrady makes his All-Star debut as a starter for the East, while David Robinson appears for the 10th and final time.

2007

While appearing on the ESPN show Outside the Lines to promote his upcoming book, John Amaechi becomes the first former NBA player to publicly come out as gay.

2018

Paul Pierce has his jersey #34 retired by the Celtics. He becomes the 23rd player with a jersey retired by the Celtics, and was joined a few years later by his 2008 championship teammate Kevin Garnett.

Russell Westbrook sets the NBA record with a 10th straight game recording a triple-double, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain. Westbrook finishes with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists in a 120-111 Thunder victory over the Trail Blazers. He would extend the streak to 11 straight games before it ended.

2025

Kevin Durant becomes just the eighth player in NBA history to score 30,000 career points, reaching the plateau with 34 points in a 119-112 Suns loss to the Grizzlies.
