1995

John Stockton surpasses Magic Johnson as the NBA’s all-time assist leader, with his 9,992nd assist during a 129-88 Jazz win over the Nuggets. Stockton would eventually retire with 15,806 assists.


1944

Dick Snyder is born in Canton, Ohio. Though he left the state to play college ball at Davidson, Snyder was inducted into the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

1955

T.R. Dunn is born in Birmingham, Alabama. He led West End High School to the 1972 Alabama state title.

1959

Dolph Schayes becomes just the sixth player in NBA history to score 50 or more points in a game, finishing with 50 in a 139-137 Syracuse Nationals overtime loss to the Celtics.

1970

Malik Sealy is born in The Bronx, New York. He was named after the civil rights leader Malik Shabazz, a.k.a. Malcolm X, for whom his father was a bodyguard at the time.

1974

Walter McCarty is born in Evansville, Indiana. He played college basketball at Kentucky but returned to his hometown in 2018 to take over as head coach at the University of Evansville.

1980

Adrian Dantley is traded from the Pacers to the Nuggets, along with a first round pick, in exchange for George McGinnis. While Dantley blossomed into a superstar in Denver, McGinnis struggled in his return to Indiana and lasted just two-and-a-half more seasons before retiring.

1981

Julius Erving is the leading scorer with 18 points but Tiny Archibald is the MVP as the Eastern Conference defeats the West 123-120 at the NBA All-Star Game in Richfield, Ohio (then the home site of the Cavaliers). Rookie Robert Parish scores 16 points in his All-Star debut.

1983

Kevin Martin is born in Zanesville, Ohio. In 2001, he was named to the Ohio all-state team, alongside LeBron James.

1984

David Stern becomes the fourth commissioner in NBA history, replacing his longtime mentor, Larry O’Brien, who had served since 1975.

1987

Buck Williams sets the Nets single game franchise record with 27 rebounds in a 150-147 overtime loss to the Warriors.

2008

Pau Gasol is traded from the Grizzlies to the Lakers, along with a second round pick, in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Marc Gasol, Aaron McKie, and two first round picks.

2010

Kobe Bryant surpasses Jerry West as the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer, with his 25,193rd career point during a 95-93 Lakers loss to the Grizzlies.
