Space Jam is released in theaters; Gus Williams sets the NBA steals record

1996

“Space Jam,” starring Michael Jordan alongside the Looney Tunes gang, is released in theaters and becomes a huge hit, winding up as the 15th highest grossing film of the year. The film also stars Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, and Larry Johnson, as well as Wayne Knight, Theresa Randle, Danny DeVito, and Bill Murray.


1935

Nera White is born in Macon County, Tennessee. After starring for Macon County High School, she was recruited for the Nashville Business College team, which White led to 10 AAU titles over 15 years.

1947

Bob Dandridge is born in Richmond, Virginia. To honor his 2022 Naismith Hall of Fame induction, June 11th was declared “Bob Dandridge Day” in his hometown.

1967

NCAA champion Greg Anthony is born in Las Vegas, Nevada.

1983

Aleksandar “Sasha” Pavlovic is born in Bar, Montenegro (then Yugoslavia).

1984

During a Bullets loss to the Clippers, Gus Williams records his 1,404th career steal, surpassing Randy Smith as the NBA’s all-time leader in the category. Williams’ record was overtaken two years later by Maurice Cheeks.

1987

Magic Johnson surpasses Jerry West as the all-time assists leader in Lakers franchise history, with his 6,329th assist during a 147-130 Lakers win over the Spurs. Johnson eventually finished his career with 10,141 assists, which is still far-and-away the Lakers record.

1986

Sergio Llull is born in Mahon, Spain. He was a fixture of the Spanish national team for over a decade, earning two Olympic medals (silver and bronze), one FIBA World Cup title, and three EuroBasket titles.

1995

Karl-Anthony Towns is born in Edison, New Jersey. His mother Jacqueline was Dominican, and Towns has represented the Dominican Republic national team, including at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

2011

Mike Krzyzewski becomes the all-time winningest coach in NCAA men’s basketball Division I history, surpassing his former coach and mentor Bob Knight with his 903rd win, a 74-69 Duke victory over Michigan State. Krzyzewski would eventually extend the record to 1,202 wins by the time of his 2022 retirement.
