The Pistons fire coach Dick Vitale; Jack McKinney is injured in a bike accident; the Cavs play their first game in Cleveland proper

1979

Dick Vitale is fired as head coach of the Pistons, just 12 games into his second season in charge, finishing his NBA coaching career with a 34-60 record. He is replaced by Richie Adubato and just a few days later, Vitale takes a job as a college basketball analyst at the fledgling ESPN.


1938

Thomas “Satch” Sanders is born in New York City, New York. He grew up playing street ball on the courts of Harlem, often against local pros from the Globetrotters and other barnstorming teams.

1957

Geoff Huston is born in Brooklyn, New York. After retiring from the NBA, he returned to his hometown to serve as Director of the St. Mary’s Recreation Center in The Bronx.

1975

Brevin Knight is born in Livingston, New Jersey. He led Seton Hall Prep to three consecutive New Jersey state titles.

1979

Lakers coach Jack McKinney suffers a major head injury as the result of a bike accident. His top assistant, Paul Westhead, became his interim replacement and later his permanent one, when the Lakers opted to buy out McKinney’s contract.

1992

The Kings defeat the Lakers in Los Angeles, 124-114, snapping a streak of 43 consecutive road losses in the rivalry. That streak had dated back to 1974, when the Kings were located in Kansas City.

1994

After 24 years in nearby Richfield, Ohio, the Cavaliers move into the city of Cleveland, playing their first game in the newly opened Gund Arena, a 100-98 loss to the Rockets. The game is also notable for Hakeem Olajuwon surpassing Calvin Murphy as the leading scorer in Rockets franchise history, with his 17,950th point.

2018

During a Warriors loss to the Bucks, Stephen Curry shoots 0-for-4 from three-point range before leaving the game with a leg injury. Upon his return on December 1, he begins a record breaking streak of 268 games with at least one three-point field goal.
