2019

The NBA returns to Japan for the first time in 16 years, with the defending champion Raptors defeating the Rockets 134-129 in a preseason game at Saitama Arena in Tokyo. But the game is overshadowed by news that CCT, the Chinese state broadcaster, would not air the games due to recent tweets by Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in support of Hong Kong protestors.


1967

The Soviet Union extend their EuroBasket winning streak to 48 consecutive games and win their sixth title in a row by defeating Czechoslovakia 89-77 in the Final in Helsinki. Poland beats Bulgaria in the third place game.

1971

NBA player and coach Tavares “Monty” Williams is born in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

1975

The financially-strapped Baltimore Claws of the ABA ostensibly trade Dan Issel to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Dave Robisch and cash. But the trade was actually forced by Issel’s former team, the Kentucky Colonels, who were upset that they hadn’t received the cash considerations promised them for trading Issel to the Claws one month prior. The Claws would soon after fold before ever playing a regular season game while Issel spent the final 10 seasons of his career with Denver.

1992

Chelsea Gray is born in Hayward, California. She was named Gatorade Prep Player of the Year for California in 2010.

1995

Grayson Allen is born in Jacksonville, Florida. He led Providence School to the Florida state title in 2013.

2009

An NBA game takes place in Taipei for the first time, with the Pacers and Nuggets playing a preseason game at Taipei Arena.
