Host nation Spain stuns the Soviet Union 80-76 in the semifinals of EuroBasket. It broke a streak of seven consecutive EuroBasket tournaments in which the U.S.S.R. won the gold medal. Spain would be defeated in the gold medal game by Yugoslavia, while Russia salvaged a bronze with a win over Czechoslovakia.

Bucks legend Sidney Moncrief comes back from retirement by signing as a free agent with the Hawks.

2017

A WNBA Finals re-match again goes to a winner-take-all game five but this time the Minnesota Lynx are victorious over the Los Angeles Sparks, 85-76. Sylvia Fowles finishes with 17 points and 20 rebounds and is named Finals MVP for the second time. For the Lynx, this is the end of a seven year stretch that included six Finals appearances and four titles.
