1974

Finals MVP and Lakers legend Jerry West announces his retirement from the NBA after 14 seasons. At the time, he was the franchise’s all-time leader in career points, assists, field goals, win shares, and All-Star appearances (14). West eventually spent another quarter century with the Lakers franchise, first as a head coach and later as a scout and then a general manager.


1968

Greg Foster is born in Oakland, California. He was teammates at Skyline High School with Gary Payton.

1985

Courtney Lee is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He led Pike High School to the Indiana state title in 2003.

1997

Jonathan Isaac is born in The Bronx, New York.

2005

Metta World Peace is officially re-instated by commissioner David Stern ahead of the ’05-’06 season, ending a nearly year-long suspension resulting from his role in the “Malice at the Palace” incident in November 2004.

2010

The United States wins its eighth FIBA World Championship for Women title, with a 89-69 victory over the host Czech Republic in the gold medal game. Both the Czechs, who earn silver, and Spain, who defeat Belarus in the bronze medal game, win their first ever FIBA World Championship medals.

2015

China defeats the Philippines 78-67 in the FIBA Asia Cup final in Changsha. It’s a 16th Asia Cup title for China, and their fifth won on home soil. Iran defeats Japan 68-63 for the bronze medal. This was the last Asia Cup tournament in which the winner clinched a spot in the subsequent Olympics.
