
1995
Dennis Rodman is traded from the Spurs to the Bulls in exchange for Will Perdue. After two tumultuous seasons in San Antonio, Rodman would go on to win three championships with Chicago, solidifying his status as an NBA legend and Naismith Hall of Fame inductee. Perdue spent four seasons with the Spurs as David Robinson’s backup center, averaging 5.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
1936
Dick Barnett is born in Gary, Indiana. He led Theodore Roosevelt High School to the 1955 Indiana state championship game, where they lost to Crispus Attucks, led by Oscar Robertson.
NCAA All-American Connie Dierking is born in Brooklyn, New York.
1960
Dereck Whittenburg is born in Glenarden, Maryland. He was teammates with Sidney Lowe at DeMatha Catholic High School and the pair then matriculated together at NC State.
1972
Aaron McKie is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was teammates with Rasheed Wallace at Simon Gratz High School, and led the team to the Philadelphia Public League title in 1991.
1978
Oscar Schmidt makes his major international debut for the Brazil national team at age 20, scoring 21 points in a 154-97 victory over China in the opening round of the FIBA World Championship in Manila.
1979
Primoz Brezec is born in Postojna, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). He represented his native Slovenia at FIBA World Cups in 2006 and 2010.
1982
Tyson Chandler is born in Hanford, California. He grew up on a family farm, playing basketball on a hoop affixed to a tree in the front yard.
1987
Joe Ingles is born in Adelaide, Australia. He is the all-time NBA career leader amongst Australian players in steals, third in points, second in assists, and fourth in rebounds.
1992
Shane Larkin is born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, baseball Hall of Famer Barry, was playing for the Reds.
1996
Un-drafted free agent Ben Wallace signs with the Bullets, kicking off the greatest career in NBA history for an un-drafted player.
Shawn Kemp does not show up for the beginning of SuperSonics training camp, kicking off a 22-day holdout spurred by his distaste with the team’s free agency decisions. He eventually did play the entire ’96-’97 season with Seattle before getting traded to the Cavaliers.
2009
The NBA owners vote to allow expanded use of instant replay reviews starting with the ’09-’10 season. Officials can now review whether a 24-second shot clock violation occurred, and which player touched the ball last in out-of-bounds deflections in the final two minutes of games.
2024
On the eve of the ’24-’25 season, the Knicks, Timberwolves, and Hornets engage in a blockbuster trade. New York receives Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota receives Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first round pick, and Charlotte receives a package of players, cash, and second round picks.
