1988

The U.S. women’s team defeats the Soviet Union for the first time in Olympics play in a 102-88 semifinals win in Seoul. Cynthia Cooper is the leading scorer with 27 points, while Katrina McClain finishes with 26 points and 15 rebounds. In the other semifinal, Yugoslavia defeats Australia 57-56.


1943

WNBA coaching champion Van Chancellor is born in Louisville, Mississippi.

1965

Steve Kerr is born in Beirut, Lebanon where his father was teaching at the American University of Beirut. Kerr spent most of his childhood in Lebanon and Egypt before moving to California during high school.

1982

Tan White is born in Tupelo, Mississippi. She was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.

1985

Anthony Morrow is born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was named North Carolina Mr. Basketball in 2004 while starring for Charlotte Latin School.

1995

Christian Wood is born in Long Beach, California. After spending his collegiate days at UNLV and his initial NBA career mostly on the East Coast, Wood returned to his hometown in 2023, signing with the Lakers.

2000

In the Olympics quarterfinals in Sydney, the United States women’s team struggles offensively but grinds out a 58-43 victory over Slovenia, led by 18 points from Lisa Leslie. The host Australians also advance, as Lauren Jackson leads the way with 17 points and nine rebounds in a 76-48 victory over Poland.

2020

The Heat finish off an Eastern Conference Finals upset of the Celtics with a 125-113 victory in game six. Bam Adebayo leads Miami with 32 points and 14 rebounds.

2023

In a three-team blockbuster, Damian Lillard is traded from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks, while Jrue Holiday and Deandre Ayton are sent to the Trail Blazers, and Jusuf Nurkic is dealt to the Suns.
