Vince Carter throws down “La Dunk de la Mort,” skying over France’s 7’2″ center Frederic Weis during a 106-94 U.S. victory to close out group stage play at the Olympics in Sydney. Antonio McDyess finishes with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the U.S. to its fifth consecutive win. Weis had been drafted in the first round by the Knicks one year prior but never reached the NBA, instead playing out his pro career mostly in his native country.

Carl Braun is born in Brooklyn, New York. He starred on both the baseball and basketball teams at Garden City High School in Long Island.
1933
NBA coaching and broadcasting legend Hubie Brown is born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
1950
After a purchasing attempt from Abe Saperstein falls through, the Chicago Stags fold due to financial insolvency. A charter BAA franchise, the Stags lasted four seasons which included an NBA Finals appearance in 1947.
1951
Bob McAdoo is born in Greensboro, North Carolina. In addition to basketball, he was also a star on the track-and-field team at Ben L. Smith High School, at one point setting the North Carolina state record in long jump.
1965
Scottie Pippen is born in Hamburg, Arkansas. He received no college scholarships offers after a star turn at Hamburg High School, and started his collegiate career as a walk-on at Central Arkansas.
1976
Chauncey Billups is born in Denver, Colorado. He was named Colorado Mr. Basketball three times while starring for George Washington High School.
1984
Two-time WNBA All-Star Ivory Latta is born in McConnells, South Carolina.
Rashad McCants is born in Asheville, North Carolina. Though his family moved to New Hampshire while McCants was in high school, he returned to his birth state to play at University of North Carolina.
1988
For the first time ever, the Soviet Union women’s team is defeated in Olympics play, losing a group stage match to Australia, 60-48. It breaks a streak of 13 consecutive wins for the Soviets, who won gold medals in 1976 and 1980, then didn’t participate in 1984 due to the boycott. Meanwhile, the United States finishes group stage play undefeated with a 94-79 victory over China. Katrina McClain leads the U.S. with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
1996
A 43-year-old Robert Parish signs as a free agent with the Bulls. He goes on to finish his career with one season in Chicago, earning a fourth championship ring.
2001
#1 overall draft pick Cade Cunningham is born in Arlington, Texas.
Michael Jordan begins his second and final comeback, by signing as a free agent with the Wizards.
2002
Tournament MVP Lisa Leslie finishes with 17 points to lead the United States to a 79-74 victory over Russia in the gold medal game of the FIBA World Championship for Women in Nanjing, China. Lauren Jackson leads the Australian team to the bronze medal.
2005
Greece defeats Germany 78-62 in the EuroBasket Final in Belgrade. Tournament MVP Dirk Nowitzki scores 23 points in the losing effort, while Theo Papaloukas leads the Greeks with 22 points and six assists. France defeats Spain 98-68 in the third place game.
2011
Tournament MVP Yi Jianlian finishes with 25 points and 16 rebounds and hits the game winning free throws for host China, who defeat Jordan 70-69 in the FIBA Asia Cup final in Wuhan. South Korea earns the bronze medal with a 70-68 victory over the Philippines.
