On the final day of group stage play in Seoul, Brazil’s Oscar Schmidt sets the Olympic single game scoring record with 55 points in a 118-110 loss to Spain. Despite the loss, Brazil does still advance to the knockout stage, where they’re defeated by the Soviet Union in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Dan Majerle and David Robinson finish with 18 points each to lead the United States to a 102-35 victory over Egypt.
1944
Ron Williams is born in Weirton, West Virginia. Along with several other Weirton High School teammates, he was one of the first Black basketball players in West Virginia University history.
1977
For the third consecutive tournament, Yugoslavia upends the mighty Soviet Union team en route to a EuroBasket title, this time with a 74-61 victory in the Final in Liege, Belgium. Drazen Dalipagic is named tournament MVP. Czechoslovakia defeats Italy in the third place game.
1981
Drew Gooden is born in Oakland, California to an American father and Finnish mother. He attempted to gain Finnish citizenship during his pro career in order to play for the Finland national team but was unsuccessful.
1983
Randy Foye is born in Newark, New Jersey. When he signed with the Nets as a free agent in 2016, Foye returned to the Newark, buying a home in nearby Rumson from Bruce Springsteen.
1989
In the first ever FIBA Asia Cup hosted on their home soil, China picks up their second straight title with a 102-72 victory over South Korea in the final in Beijing. Chinese Taipei defeats Japan 69-58 to earn the bronze medal.
2000
The United States women’s team defeats Poland 76-57 to close out group stage play at the Olympics in Sydney. Sheryl Swoopes and Yolanda Griffth score 16 points each for the U.S., while Margo Dydek, then with the Utah Starzz of the WNBA, finishes with 24 points and 10 rebounds for Poland.
