
1972
Julius Erving takes the court in an Atlanta Hawks uniform for an exhibition game against the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA. Erving had signed with the Hawks previously in the offseason and a lawsuit was outstanding on whether the contract was valid. Due to the legal situation, the NBA fined the Hawks $25,000 for playing Erving, who would ultimately return to the Virginia Squires of the ABA for the ’72-’73 season.
1964
NBA player and coach Larry Krystkowiak is born in Shelby, Montana.
1971
Eric Montross is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He led Lawrence North High School to the Indiana state title in 1990 and was also a star pitcher for the school’s baseball team.
1979
NBA veteran Tyree “Ricky” Davis is born in Las Vegas, Nevada.
1988
Dan Majerle’s 20 points and nine rebounds leads the United States men’s team to a 108-57 victory over China in group stage play at the Seoul Olympics. Six other Americans score in double figures in the game, including Mitch Richmond with 15 and David Robinson with 13.
1989
Brandon Jennings is born in Compton, California. Amidst NBA All-Star festivities in Los Angeles in 2011, he teamed up with his shoe sponsor, Under Armour, to refurbish an outdoor court in his old neighborhood of Gardena.
1996
Napheesa Collier is born in Jefferson City, Missouri. When she failed to make the roster of the local AAU team, Collier’s parents started their own AAU program, which quickly rose to become one of the top amateur teams in the country.
1997
John Collins is born in Layton, Utah where his mother, Lyria, was stationed at the Hill Air Force Base.
2000
The United States men’s team improves to 4-0 in group stage play at the Olympics in Sydney with a 102-56 victory over New Zealand. Vince Carter finishes with 18 points and Allan Houston adds 17. The Toronto Raptors’ Sean Marks is the leading scorer with 10 points for the Kiwis, who ultimately finished in 11th place in their Olympics basketball debut.
2006
Australia wins its first ever FIBA World Championship for Women title, with a 91-74 victory over Russia in the gold medal game. Tournament MVP Penny Taylor leads the Aussies with 28 points and nine rebounds. Earlier, the United States earned bronze with a 99-59 win over the host Brazilians, led by 28 points from Diana Taurasi.
2016
Kevin Garnett officially announces that he is retiring after 21 seasons in the NBA that included one league MVP, one Defensive Player of the Year, and one championship. At the time of his retirement, Garnett is 17th in league history in scoring, ninth in total rebounds, and 12th in blocks.
2020
Rookie Tyler Herro torches the Celtics for 37 points off the bench as the Heat win game four of the Eastern Conference Finals 112-109 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.
