France wins its first ever EuroBasket title, defeating Lithuania 80-66 in the Final in Ljubljana, Slovenia. NBA stars Nicolas Batum, Boris Diaw, and tournament MVP Tony Parker lead the French team to victory. Spain defeats Croatia 92-66 in the third place game.

Naismith Hall of Fame coach Robert “Lute” Olson is born in Mayville, North Dakota.

1942

Walter “Larry” Jones is born in Columbus, Ohio. He didn’t play formal basketball until his senior year at East High School and was lightly recruited by colleges, ending up at nearby University of Toledo.

1974

Gary Trent is born in Columbus, Ohio. He set a national high school record in his senior year at Hamilton Township High School by shooting 81.4% from the field.

1979

Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Swin Cash is born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

1988

The United States women’s team defeats Yugoslavia 101-74 in group stage play at the Olympics in Seoul. Teresa Edwards leads all scorers with 23 points, while Bridgette Gordon adds 20 points and Cynthia Cooper scores 17.
