Luka Doncic and Slovenia are EuroBasket champs; Rick Adelman becomes coach of the Kings; Ron Artest announces a name change

2017

An 18-year-old Luka Doncic helps lead Slovenia to its first ever EuroBasket title, with a 93-85 victory over Serbia in the Final in Istanbul. Doncic finishes the game with eight points and seven rebounds while Goran Dragic, who had announced he was officially retiring from the national team after the game, scored 35 points and was named tournament MVP. Spain defeats Russia 93-85 in the third place game.

Phil Jackson is born in Deer Lodge, Montana.

Kermit Washington is born in Washington, D.C.

1953

Ulyssees “Junior” Bridgeman is born in East Chicago, Indiana.

1959

Lester Conner is born in Memphis, Tennessee.

1974

Rasheed Wallace is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1998

Rick Adelman is hired as head coach of the Kings, replacing the recently fired Eddie Jordan. Over the next six seasons, Adelman leads the Kings to arguably the greatest stretch in franchise history, with a 395-229 record and a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2002.

2000

Ray Allen leads the way with 21 points as the United States men’s team opens group stage play at the Olympics in Sydney with a 119-72 victory over China. A 20-year-old Yao Ming finishes with five points and three rebounds in his first Olympics appearance. In other action, Steve Nash drops 15 points and 15 assists in his Olympics debut, leading Canada to a 101-90 victory over Australia.

2007

Five members of the Duquesne University men’s basketball team are injured in a shooting that takes place on campus. Amongst the victims are Aaron Jackson and Shawn James, who both recovered fully and went on to have successful pro careers in Europe.

2011

Ron Artest legally changes his name to Metta World Peace.
