Adrian Dantley and Spencer Haywood are swapped; Jim Calhoun retires; France wins its first FIBA World Cup medal in a thriller

1979

Adrian Dantley is traded from the Lakers to the Jazz in exchange for Spencer Haywood. It was already the third trade in the first three years of Dantley’s career, but he finally found stability in Utah, becoming a six-time All-Star and two-time scoring champion. Meanwhile, Haywood lasted just one season in Los Angeles before getting suspended for substance abuse and subsequently waived.

Nene (nee Maybyner Rodney Hilario) is born in Sao Carlos, Brazil.

2012

Jim Calhoun steps down as head coach of Connecticut, due to health concerns. Over 26 years with the Huskies, Calhoun had lead the program to four Final Four appearances and three national championships.

2014

In a FIBA World Cup bronze medal game thriller in Madrid, France comes from behind late to defeat Lithuania 95-93. Despite the absence of their star player Tony Parker, the French team earns its first ever FIBA World Cup medal.

2015

Moses Malone passes away at age 60 from heart disease.

2019

Spain defeats Australia 95-88 in a double overtime semifinal thriller at the FIBA World Cup in Beijing. Marc Gasol finishes with 33 points while Ricky Rubio adds 19 points and 12 assists. In the other semifinal, Argentina cruises past France 80-66 behind 28 points and 13 rebounds from Luis Scola.

2022

Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver is suspended for one year by the NBA and WNBA and fined $10 million after an independent investigation uncovered numerous examples of racist and sexist misconduct by the businessman. Sarver soon after sold the franchises to real estate investors Mat and Justin Ishiba.
