1980

Bernard King is traded from the Jazz to the Warriors in exchange for Wayne Cooper and a second round pick. King had played just 19 games for Utah before getting suspended indefinitely following an arrest for sexual assault, and subsequently entering a rehab facility for drug and alcohol abuse. He soon after revived his career with Golden State.


1951

NCAA scoring leader Carl “Johnny” Neumann is born in Memphis, Tennessee.

1963

Gerald Wilkins is born in Atlanta, Georgia. He averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior at Southwest Atlanta High School.

1974

Three-time WNBA All-Star DeLisha Milton-Jones (nee Milton) is born in Riceboro, Georgia.

1983

Ike Diogu is born in Buffalo, New York. His parents immigrated from Nigeria to attend college and both became professors.

1984

An NBA exhibition game is played overseas for the first time, with the Nets and Suns facing off in a preseason game in Milan, Italy.

1985

Shaun Livingston is born in Peoria, Illinois. He led Peoria High School to back-to-back Illinois state titles in 1999 and 2000.

2009

One of the greatest Naismith Hall of Fame classes of all time gets inducted in a ceremony in Springfield, Massachusetts, with Michael Jordan, John Stockton, and David Robinson getting enshrined. Stockton’s longtime Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is also inducted as part of the proceedings.

2010

Kevin Durant continues his domination of the FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, scoring a tournament high 38 points to lead the United States to a 89-74 victory over Lithuania in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Hedo Turkoglu led the host Turkish team to an 83-82 comeback victory over Serbia.

2011

Argentina defeats Brazil 80-75 in the FIBA AmeriCup final in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Dominican Republic defeats Puerto Rico 103-89 for the bronze medal. The United States opted not to participate and most NBA players were unable to play due to the ongoing lockout.

2013

Mexico clinches its first FIBA AmeriCup title with a 91-89 victory over Puerto Rico in the final in Caracas, Venezuela. Argentina defeats the Dominican Republic 103-93 in the bronze medal game. Gustavo Ayon is named tournament MVP.

2014

The United States cruises again at the FIBA World Cup in Barcelona, defeating Lithuania 96-68. Kyrie Irving leads the U.S. with 18 points while Klay Thompson and James Harden add 16 each. In the other semifinal, Serbia holds off a late comeback from Nicolas Batum and France to win 90-85.

2019

Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert lead the way for France in a shocking 89-79 upset of the United States in the semifinals of the FIBA World Cup in Dongguan, China. It breaks a streak of 24 consecutive wins in FIBA World Cup competition for the U.S., which was struggling in the wake of an injury to Jayson Tatum earlier in the tournament.

2020

Jayson Tatum’s 29 points and 12 rebounds leads the Celtics to a 92-87 victory over the Raptors in a winner-take-all game seven of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

2023

Argentina defeats Brazil 75-73 in the FIBA AmeriCup final in Recife, Brazil. Gabriel Deck leads the way with 20 points and is named tournament MVP. The United States defeats Canada 84-80 in the bronze medal game. The American squad was again comprised of G-League players, including Jeremy Pargo, Jodie Meeks, Gary Clark, Patrick McCaw, and Norris Cole.
