Former Knicks star and three-term U.S. Senator Bill Bradley officially announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president. He ultimately withdrew in March of 2000 after failing to defeat Al Gore in any of the first 20 primaries or caucuses.

NCAA All-American Jim Krebs is born in Webster Groves, Missouri.
1956
Four-time NBA All-Star Maurice Cheeks is born in Chicago, Illinois.
1960
The United States defeats Italy 112-81 in a medal round match-up at the Rome Olympics. Jerry Lucas is the leading scorer with 26 points, followed by Oscar Robertson’s 22 and Jerry West’s 18.
1970
Latrell Sprewell is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After retiring from the NBA, he returned to Milwaukee and purchased a home and a yacht called “Milwaukee’s Best” which was repossessed when he failed to make payments.
Clarence Weatherspoon is born in Crawford, Mississippi. He returned to the area in 2024 to become head coach at Meridian Community College.
1972
Cuba earns its first and only Olympic medal in men’s basketball, defeating Italy 66-65 in the bronze medal game in Munich. The Cuban men’s squad has not managed to even qualify for an Olympics tournament since 1980.
1990
Matthew Dellavedova is born in Maryborough, Australia. His first sport was Australian rules football but he switched to concentrating solely on basketball as a teenager.
2002
Led by a roster featuring Vlade Divac, Peja Stojakovic, and Dejan Bodiroga, Yugoslavia wins its second consecutive FIBA World Championship (and fifth overall) by defeating Argentina 84-77 in overtime in the gold medal game in Indianapolis. Earlier in the day, tournament MVP Dirk Nowitzki led Germany to its first ever FIBA World Championship medal, scoring 29 points in a 117-94 bronze medal game win over New Zealand.
2010
The defending FIBA World champions go down in the quarterfinals, as a Milos Teodosic buzzer beater gives Serbia a 92-89 win over Spain in Istanbul. The Spaniards were playing without Pau Gasol, who sat out the tournament to rest for the upcoming NBA season. In the other quarterfinal, Ersan Ilyasova finishes with 19 points to lead the host Turkey team to a 95-68 victory over Russia.
2013
Riquna Williams becomes the first player in WNBA history to score 50+ points in a game, finishing with a single game record 51 for the Tulsa Shock in a 98-65 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars. Her record stood for five years before getting broken by Liz Cambage.
2020
A difficult season for the Bucks comes to a disappointing end, with a 103-94 loss to the Heat in game five of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Jimmy Butler leads Miami with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the game with a sprained ankle.
2023
Germany stuns the United States in the semifinals of the FIBA World Cup, 113-111. The U.S. would lose again two days later to Canada to get shut out of the medals, while Germany continued on to a gold medal game win over Serbia.
