During an 87-64 preliminary round victory over Hungary, Spain’s Pau Gasol becomes the all-time leading scorer in EuroBasket history with his 1,033rd career point. He surpasses his longtime FIBA rival and then Spurs teammate Tony Parker of France. When Spain earns a bronze medal later in the tournament, Gasol additionally ties Sergei Belov and Kresimir Cosic with his seventh EuroBasket medal.

Naismith Hall of Fame coach Al McGuire is born in Queens, New York.

1929

Clyde Lovellette is born in Petersburg, Indiana. After retiring from basketball, he returned to Indiana to operate a cattle farm and was elected Sheriff of Vigo County.

1944

Street ball legend Earl “The Goat” Manigault is born in Charleston, South Carolina.

1945

Two-time ABA All-Star Bob Verga is born in Neptune, New Jersey.

1964

Original Celtics founder and owner Walter Brown passes away unexpectedly at age 59. Ownership of the team automatically passes to his wife, Marjorie Brown, who subsequently sells it a year later to real estate developer Marvin Kratter.

1972

Jim Forbes leads the way with 14 points as the United States cruises past Italy 68-38 in the semifinals of the Olympics in Munich. In the other semifinal, Sergey Belov’s 16 points leads the Soviet Union to a 67-61 victory over Cuba.

1974

NBA All-Star Antonio McDyess is born in Quitman, Mississippi.

1977

Mateen Cleaves is born in Flint, Michigan. He was the de facto leader of the “Flint-stones,” a group of Flint natives who led Michigan State to the NCAA title in 2000.

1978

An official overseas game with an NBA team takes place for the first time, as the defending champion Washington Bullets are stunned 98-97 by Maccabi Tel Aviv in Tel Aviv, Israel.

1988

Kevin Love is born in Santa Monica, California. His father, Stan, played in the NBA for four seasons while his uncle, Mike, was a founding member of The Beach Boys.

1996

Donovan Mitchell is born in Elmsford, New York. His father, Donovan, Sr., was a baseball player and later executive in the Mets organization.

2019

A much hyped FIBA World Cup second round match-up between the United States and Greece turns out to be a one-sided affair, as the U.S. prevails 69-53 to stay undefeated (4-0) in the tournament. Kemba Walker leads the Americans with 15 points and six assists, while Giannis Antetokounmpo finishes with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Greeks. Greece would later recover to win its final game against Brazil but failed to qualify for the knockout round.
