
1985
Bill Walton is traded from the Clippers to the Celtics in exchange for Cedric Maxwell and a first round pick. Maxwell had earned Finals MVP for Boston in 1981 but was deemed expendable after struggling in the 1985 playoffs due to the effects of knee surgery. Walton subsequently revived his career in Boston, albeit briefly, winning Sixth Man of the Year for the ’85-’86 season and earning his second championship ring.
1946
Four-time ABA All-Star Ron Boone is born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
1959
Oscar Robertson and Jerry West team up to lead the United States to a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Chicago, clinching it with a 93-79 victory over Brazil in their final game. The U.S. dominated the competition, winning all six of their games by an average margin of 29.5 points per game. Puerto Rico earns silver and Brazil settles for bronze.
1962
NBA All-Star Kevin Willis born in Los Angeles, California.
1974
Cazzie Russell becomes the first free agent in NBA history, signing a contract with the Lakers. His former team, the Warriors, receive a first round pick as compensation.
1982
Temeka Johnson is born in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition to basketball, she was also a track star at Bonnabel High School.
1990
John Wall is born in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was cut from the varsity team at Garner Magnet High School and subsequently transferred to Word of God Christian Academy, where he developed into the top ranked prep recruit in the country.
Doug Moe is fired as head coach of the Nuggets. His 10-year tenure with the team was the longest at the time in the NBA, and included nine playoff appearances plus numerous offensive records broken under his innovative “passing game” system. He is replaced by another offensive guru in Paul Westhead, who struggles to turn things around and is fired himself after just two seasons.

Joe Harris is born in Chelan, Washington. At Chelan High School, he was coached by his father, Joe, Sr.
2009
Leandro Barbosa and Tiago Splitter lead Brazil to a 61-60 victory over Puerto Rico in the FIBA AmeriCup final in San Juan. Carlos Arroyo leads the Puerto Ricans with 14 points but misses a potential game winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Argentina defeats Canada 88-73 in the bronze medal game. The United States did not participate, as they had already clinched a spot in the 2010 World Cup as the defending Olympic champions.
2010
Chauncey Billups finishes with 18 points, while Kevin Durant, Eric Gordon, and Rudy Gay add 17 each, to lead the United States to a 121-66 victory over Angola in the FIBA World Championship Round of 16 in Istanbul. The other matchup of the day features Timofey Mozgov leading Russia to a 78-56 victory over New Zealand.
2014
Stephen Curry’s 20 points leads the United States to an 86-63 victory over Mexico in the FIBA World Cup Round of 16 in Barcelona. In other action, France defeats Croatia 69-64, Slovenia defeats Dominican Republic 71-61, and the host Spaniards cruise past Senegal 89-56.
2023
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic do battle in the FIBA World Cup quarterfinals in Pasay, Philippines, with Gilgeous-Alexander’s Canada defeating Doncic’s Slovenia 100-89. Gilgeous-Alexander finishes with 31 points and 10 rebounds while Doncic has 26 points and five assists.
