
2002
For the first time since the Dream Team took the court at the 1992 Olympics, a U.S. men’s team made up of NBA players is defeated. It happens in the second round of the 2002 FIBA World Championship, when Argentina defeats the United States 87-80 in Indianapolis. It snaps a streak of 37 consecutive wins for the U.S. team with NBA players on the court. Despite the loss, the U.S. finishes second in the group and advances to the quarterfinals.
1963
After six seasons with the Knicks, Willie Naulls has his rights sold to Boston, where he eventually wins three championships as Bill Russell’s teammate before retiring.
1988
James “J.J.” Hickson is born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was named a McDonald’s All-American while starring for Joseph Wheeler High School in nearby Marietta.
2004
Alphonso Ford passes away from leukemia at age 32. The former NCAA scoring leader with Mississippi Valley State was one of the biggest EuroLeague stars of the ’00s and upon his death, the yearly award for top scorer was renamed the Alphonso Ford EuroLeague Trophy.
2005
Leandro Barbosa scores 29 points to lead Brazil to a 100-88 victory over Argentina in the FIBA AmeriCup final in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The United States, which sent a roster of D-League, CBA, and overseas pros, just barely qualifies for the 2006 FIBA World Cup with a fourth place finish.
2010
The FIBA World Championship Round of 16 kicks off in Istanbul, with Nenad Krstic leading Serbia to a thrilling 73-72 victory over Croatia, while Spain defeat Greece 80-72 in a rematch of the 2006 gold medal game.
