2008

As selected in fan voting, Thunder is announced as the new name of the Oklahoma City franchise formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics. The name was a reference to both the city’s location within “Tornado Alley” and its Native American heritage. The team’s logo and colors were also unveiled at a press conference hosted by owner Clay Bennett.


1931

NBA coaching legend Dick Motta is born in Midvale, Utah.

1957

Earl Cureton is born in Detroit, Michigan. His nickname “The Twirl” came from Dick Vitale, who coached him at the University of Detroit Mercy.

1967

NBA All-Star Chris Gatling is born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

1970

George Lynch is born in Roanoke, Virginia. He helped lead Patrick Henry High School to the Virginia state title in 1988.

1972

The United States men’s team closes out group stage play at the Olympics in Munich with a 99-33 victory over Japan. Seven different America players score in double digits, led by Mike Bantom’s 18 points. The U.S. qualifies for the knockout stage with a perfect 7-0 record, while Cuba joins them with a 64-63 win over Brazil.

1973

Damon Stoudamire is born in Portland, Oregon. He led Wilson High School to two Oregon state titles and was named Oregon Prep Player of the Year twice.

1974

Nate Thurmond is traded from the Warriors to the Bulls in exchange for Clifford Ray and a first round pick.

1982

Chris Wilcox is born in Raleigh, North Carolina. After his playing career ended, he started his own medical supply business in Raleigh called Wilcox Distribution.

2003

Rick Carlisle is hired as head coach of the Pacers, taking over for a fired Isiah Thomas. Carlisle had previously served as an assistant on the Pacers under his former Celtics teammate Larry Bird, then was head coach of the Pistons for two seasons in between.

2006

Spain dominates Greece 70-47 in the gold medal game of the FIBA World Championship in Saitama, Japan. It’s the first ever FIBA Worlds title for Spain and the first ever medal of any color for Greece, who earns silver. Despite missing the gold medal game with an injury, Pau Gasol is named tournament MVP.

2017

The United States defeats Argentina 81-76 in the FIBA AmeriCup final in Cordoba, Argentina. It was the first time in five tournaments that the U.S. had participated, and they sent a roster of G-League players, led by Darrun Hilliard, C.J. Williams, and Jameel Warney, who earned tournament MVP. Mexico defeats the U.S. Virgin Islands 79-65 in the bronze medal game. This was the first ever AmeriCup in which the results did not determine qualifying spots for the World Cup or Olympics, as the qualification system had been recently revamped by FIBA.

2019

The United States survives a scare from Turkey at the FIBA World Cup in Shanghai, prevailing 93-92 in overtime when Khris Middleton hits a pair of game winning free throws. But most crucially, Jayson Tatum leaves the game with a sprained ankle and does not return for the remainder of the tournament.

2022

Donovan Mitchell is traded from the Jazz to the Cavaliers in exchange for Ochai Agbaji, Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, and five first round picks.
