Dominique Wilkins is traded from the Jazz to the Hawks in exchange for John Drew and Freeman Williams. It’s a historically lopsided deal, necessitated by Wilkins refusing to play for the Jazz team that drafted him #3 overall earlier in the summer, after the team requested he switch to power forward.

Adolph Rupp is born in Halstead, Kansas. He starred for the Halstead High School team, one of the first in the state of Kansas to play with an actual basketball.

Nate “Tiny” Archibald is born in The Bronx, New York. He was initially cut from the varsity team at DeWitt Clinton High School despite already being a playground legend.
1960
The United States ends the semifinals round at the Rome Olympics with an 81-57 victory over the Soviet Union. Jerry West is the leading scorer with 19 points and Oscar Robertson adds 16 points. Despite the loss, the Soviets advance to the medal round with the U.S., alongside Brazil and host Italy.
1963
NBA player, coach, and broadcaster Sam Mitchell is born in Columbus, Georgia.
1969
Chet Walker is traded from the 76ers to the Bulls in exchange for Bob Kauffman and Jim Washington.
1970
Rick Barry is traded from the Virginia Squires to the New York Nets in exchange for a first round pick and cash considerations. Barry never actually played for the Squires, who had just moved from Oakland to Norfolk, Virginia, a locale that Barry mocked in an infamous Sports Illustrated interview.
1983
Esteban Bautista is born in Montevideo, Uruguay. In 2005, he became the first Uruguayan player in NBA history, when he debuted with the Hawks.
1989
Marcus and Markieff Morris are born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Markieff is the older twin brother by seven minutes.
1991
Natasha Howard is born in Toledo, Ohio. She was named Ohio Ms. Basketball in 2010 while starring for Waite High School.
1997
NBA All-Star Brandon Ingram is born in Kinston, North Carolina.
1999
Yolanda Griffith of the Sacramento Monarchs is named WNBA league MVP, as well as Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. The then 29-year-old had spent several seasons playing professionally in Germany and various other U.S. leagues before joining the Monarchs as their second overall pick in the 1999 draft.
2006
The day after getting defeated by Greece in the FIBA World Championship semifinals, the United States rallies for a bronze medal, defeating Argentina 96-81. Dwyane Wade leads the Americans with 31 points while LeBron James finishes with 22 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
2007
Kobe Bryant finishes with 31 points and 14 assists as the United States defeats Argentina 118-81 in the FIBA AmeriCup final in Las Vegas. The victory clinches a spot for the “Redeem Team” in the 2008 Olympics. Luis Scola scores 23 points in the losing effort and is named tournament MVP.
2020
A James Harden block of a Luguentz Dort three-pointer seals a 104-102 victory for the Rockets over the Thunder in a winner-take-all game seven of the Western Conference Quarterfinals in “The Bubble” in Orlando, Florida.
