A high octane Western Conference Quarterfinals comes down to a battle of attrition in game seven, with the Nuggets defeating the Jazz 80-78 to overcome a 3-1 series deficit and advance to the Conference Semifinals. Utah’s Donovan Mitchell averages 36.3 points per game for the series while Denver’s Jamal Murray averages 31.6 points per game.


1935

Guy Rodgers is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A star player for Northeast High School and Temple University, he was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

1956

Pistons legend Vinnie Johnson is born in Brooklyn, New York.

1960

The United States opens up the semifinals round at the Rome Olympics with a 104-42 victory over Yugoslavia. Oscar Robertson and Terry Dischinger leads the U.S. with 16 points each.

1966

Tim Hardaway is born in Chicago, Illinois. Along with fellow NBA All-Star and South Sider Terry Cummings, he regularly hosts basketball clinics and camps in the city for at-risk youth.

The Baltimore Bullets trade five-time All-Star Bailey Howell to the Celtics in exchange for Mel Counts. Howell spends four seasons in Boston, getting named to one more All-Star team and winning two championships.

1972

Mike Bantom finishes with 17 points and Tom McMillen adds 16 as the United States defeats Egypt 96-31 in group stage play at the Olympics in Munich.

1975

NBA veteran Cuttino Mobley is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1977

Reigning Rookie of the Year Adrian Dantley is traded from the Buffalo Braves to the Pacers, along with Mike Bantom, in exchange for Billy Knight. The Pacers would then turn around and trade Dantley to the Lakers just 23 games into the ’77-’78 season.

Tiny Archibald is traded from the Nets to the Buffalo Braves in exchange for George Johnson and two first round picks.

1982

Ryan Gomes is born in Waterbury, Connecticut. The pride of Wilby High School, he’s the only player in NBA history to attend the school.

1991

China wins its third consecutive FIBA Asia Cup title, defeating South Korea 104-88 in the final in Kobe, Japan. The host Japanese squad earns bronze with a 63-60 victory over Chinese Taipei.

1998

Josh Okogie is born in Lagos, Nigeria. His family immigrated to the United States when Josh was three years old, settling in the Atlanta area.

The Houston Comets clinch their second consecutive WNBA title with a 80-71 victory over the Phoenix Mercury in game three of the WNBA Finals. Cynthia Cooper leads the Comets with 23 points and for the second straight year, is named Finals MVP in addition to winning league MVP.

1999

Cam Reddish is born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He was named Mr. Pennsylvania Basketball in 2018 while starring for Westtown High School.

2001

The Los Angeles Sparks clinch their first WNBA title with an 82-54 victory over the Charlotte Sting in game two of the WNBA Finals, finishing a sweep. Lisa Leslie finishes with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, and is named Finals MVP.

2004

Charges are dismissed in Kobe Bryant’s sexual assault trial in Eagle County, Colorado, when his accuser informs prosecutors that she is unwilling to testify. Bryant had spent over nine months engaging in pre-trial activities, which often affected his availability for the Lakers during the ’03-’04 season and subsequent playoffs. Though the criminal case never reached the trial phase, the two parties eventually reached a settlement in 2005 in a civil lawsuit.

2006

Despite sporting a roster featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul, the United States is defeated in the semifinals of the FIBA World Championship, losing 101-95 to Greece in Saitama, Japan. It was the first and only loss of the tournament for the U.S., which rallied two days later to earn bronze. In the other semifinal, Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to a 75-74 victory over Argentina.

2014

Senegal stuns Croatia 77-75 in a preliminary round game in the FIBA World Cup. Gorgui Dieng leads the Senegalese team with 27 points and eight rebounds. Previously 0-11 in competitive FIBA World Cup games, this was a second straight win for Senegal, having previously defeated Puerto Rico. Both Senegal and Croatia eventually advance to the Round of 16 out of Group B.

2019

The United States kicks off its FIBA World Cup title defense with an 88-67 victory over Czech Republic. Donovan Mitchell leads the U.S. with 16 points while Kemba Walker adds 14.

2023

For the second time in the tournament, Latvia stuns a traditional power in the FIBA World Cup, upsetting Spain 74-69 in a second round match-up. Spain went on to lose its next game to Canada, eliminating them from a FIBA World Cup before the quarterfinals round for the first time since 1978.
