2017

Having demanded a trade earlier in the summer, Kyrie Irving is shipped from the Cavaliers to the Celtics in exchange for Jae Crowder, Isaiah Thomas, Ante Zizic, a first round pick, and a second round pick. Irving had spent his first six seasons with Cleveland, earning Rookie of the Year, making four All-Star appearances, and helping the team win its first ever championship in 2016.


1946

Ted McClain is born in Nashville, Tennessee. He led segregated Pearl High School to the Tennessee state title in 1966.

1947

Billy Keller is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He spent his entire basketball career in the state of Indiana, from playing for George Washington High School, Purdue University, and the Pacers, to coaching at the University of Indianapolis.

1953

Robert Parish is born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He led Woodlawn High School to the Louisiana state title in 1972, then attended nearby HBCU Centenary.

1955

Robert Reid is born in Atlanta, Georgia.

1958

NCAA coach and broadcaster Fran Fraschilla is born in Brooklyn, New York.

1972

Behind 20 points from Marquinhos, Brazil puts a scare into the United States but falls 61-54 in group stage play at the Munich Olympics. Tom Henderson is the leading scorer for the U.S. with 12 points.

1996

NCAA All-American and champion Mikal Bridges is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1997

The Houston Comets clinch the first WNBA title by defeating the New York Liberty, 65-51. Cynthia Cooper finishes with 25 points and is named Finals MVP.

2014

The 17th FIBA World Cup gets underway in Spain. It’s the first edition under the World Cup name, a change from previous editions as the World Championship. On the opening day of competition, the United States defeats Finland 114-55 behind 18 points from Klay Thompson and 17 from Anthony Davis. Meanwhile, Pau Gasol scores 33 points to lead the host Spaniards over Iran 90-60, Brazil upsets France 65-63, and Greece defeats Senegal 87-64 in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s World Cup debut at age 19.
