1965

With their superstar center threatening retirement, the Celtics grant Bill Russell a contract extension worth $100,001 a year, which was purposefully one dollar higher than the contract recently signed by Wilt Chamberlain with the 76ers. Russell subsequently played four more seasons with Boston, leading the team to three additional championships.


1950

A dispersal draft is held to distribute the players of the four franchises that withdrew from the NBA after the ’49-’50 season, plus the one team that folded (St. Louis Bombers). Notable picks include Ed Macauley, formerly of the Bombers, going to the Celtics.

1970

Seven-time NBA champion Robert Horry is born in Hartford County, Maryland.

1976

Damon Jones is born in Galveston, Texas. Ball High School retired his jersey #25 in a 2009 ceremony.

1979

Deanna Nolan is born in Flint, Michigan. She was named basketball “Miss Michigan” in 1995 after leading Flint Northern High School to the state title.

1994

Caris LeVert is born in Columbus, Ohio. He led Pickerington High School Central to the Ohio state title in 2012.

2004

In the quarterfinals of the women’s Olympics tournament in Athens, the United States crushes Greece 102-72. Shannon Johnson leads the Americans with 21 points, while Tina Thompson finishes with 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. In the other quarterfinals, Lauren Jackson drops 28 points in a 94-55 Australia victory over New Zealand, Russia defeats Czech Republic 70-49, and Brazilian legend Janeth Arcain scores 27 points in a 67-63 win against Spain.

2019

The 19th FIBA World Cup gets underway across the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The United States roster is headlined by Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Halliburton, and Jalen Brunson, while other notable players making their World Cup debut include Luka Doncic (Slovenia), Jordan Clarkson (Philippines), Josh Giddey (Australia), Lauri Markkannen (Finland), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada), and brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner (Germany).
