1969

A 20-year-old Spencer Haywood signs a contract with the Denver Rockets of the ABA under the league’s newly instituted “hardship clause” which allows players to become eligible earlier than four years removed from high school graduation. Haywood goes on to lead the ABA in scoring while earning Rookie of the Year and league MVP honors in his rookie season.


1945

Bulls legend Tom Boerwinkle is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

1951

Allan Bristow is born in Richmond, Virginia. For his contributions at Henrico High School and at Virginia Tech, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

1966

Rik Smits is born in Eindhoven, Netherlands. He represented the Dutch national team at several major events, most notably the 1986 FIBA World Cup.

1970

Longtime NBA coach and executive Lawrence Frank is born in New York City, New York.

1976

Pat Garrity is born in Las Vegas, Nevada, where his father, a former Division I NCAA football player, was stationed at an air force base.

1978

Kobe Bryant is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while his father Joe was playing for the 76ers.

1987

Darren Collison is born in Rancho Cucamonga, California. His mother, June Griffith, represented Guyana in track and field at the 1984 Olympics.

Oscar Schmidt scores 46 points and leads an improbable second half comeback as Brazil stuns the United States 120-115 in the Pan American Games gold medal game in Indianapolis. It breaks a streak of 33 consecutive Pan Am wins for the U.S., who was led by David Robinson, Danny Manning, and Rex Chapman. Puerto Rico defeats Canada for the bronze medal.

1988

Jeremy Lin is born in Palo Alto, California. He starred at Palo Alto High School and was named all-state in California in his senior year.

1990

Seth Curry is born in Charlotte, North Carolina while his father, Dell, was playing for the Hornets.

1994

Jusuf Nurkic is born in Zivince, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was discovered at age 14 when a sports agent just happened to read a news article about Jusuf’s father, a seven-foot, 400 pound police officer, and contacted the family in hopes of finding a similarly sized son to train in basketball.

1998

P.J. Washington is born in Louisville, Kentucky. His parents met at Middle Tennessee State University, where they starred on the men’s and women’s basketball teams, respectively.

2004

The United States men’s team defeats Angola 89-53 at the Olympics in Athens to finish the group stage with a 3-2 record and advance to the quarterfinals. Tim Duncan leads the U.S. with 15 points, while a 19-year-old LeBron James adds 11.

2005

Following an arrest for a DUI, Bob Huggins is forced to re-sign as head coach of Cincinnati after 16 years in charge.

2012

The inaugural FIBA 3×3 World Cup gets underway in Athens, Greece. The event features a men’s tournament, a women’s tournament, and a mixed tournament. The U.S. women’s team is stacked with NCAA stars Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Bria Hartley (Connecticut), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland), and easily defeats Germany and Angola on the first day of competition.

2014

In the wake of LeBron James returning to Cleveland as a free agent, the Cavaliers trade #1 overall picks Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett to the Timberwolves in exchange for Kevin Love.

2020

Luka Doncic finishes with 43 points, 17 rebounds, and 13 assists, and hits a buzzer beating three-pointer to lift the Mavericks to a 135-133 overtime win over the Clippers in game four of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Game four of the Western Conference Quarterfinals between the Jazz and Nuggets becomes one of the all-time great mano-a-mano battles in NBA playoffs history, as Jamal Murray finishes with 50 points and 11 rebounds but Donovan Mitchell drops 51 points to lead the Jazz to a 129-127 victory over the Nuggets.
