The United States men’s team claims gold at the Olympics in Rio, defeating Serbia 96-66 in the gold medal game. Kevin Durant leads the way with 30 points while Carmelo Anthony becomes the first player to earn three Olympic basketball gold medals. The bronze medal game is a thriller, with Spain defeating Australia 89-88 on a pair of late free throws from Sergio Rodriguez. Pau Gasol finishes with 31 points and 11 rebounds in his final Olympics game, earning his third career medal (two silvers and one bronze).
1936
Wilt Chamberlain is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His first sport was track and field before taking up organized basketball in seventh grade at Shoemaker Junior High School.
1986
Adrian Dantley is traded from the Jazz to the Pistons, along with two second round picks, in exchange for Kent Benson and Kelly Tripucka. Dantley would spend just two-and-a-half seasons in Detroit before getting traded again to the Mavericks.
1987
Six-time WNBA All-Star DeWanna Bonner is born in Fairfield, Alabama.
NBA champion Jodie Meeks is born in Nashville, Tennessee.
2004
For the first time in Olympics history, the United States men’s team is defeated twice in the same tournament, losing 94-90 to Lithuania in group stage play in Athens. This followed a defeat earlier in the group stage portion at the hands of Puerto Rico. Sarunas Jasikevičius, who would eventually play three seasons in the NBA, leads Lithuania with 28 points, while Richard Jefferson is the top scorer for the U.S. with 20. Lithuania, with a 4-0 record, clinches the top spot in Group A with the victory, while the U.S., despite falling to a 2-2 record, did clinch a spot in the quarterfinals by virtue of an Australia loss to Puerto Rico on the same day.
