1992

After months of speculation, Larry Bird officially announces his retirement from the NBA during a press conference at the Boston Garden. The three-time league MVP and two-time Finals MVP had played just 45 games for the Celtics in ’91-’92 due to various ailments.


1954

Rickey Green is born in Chicago, Illinois. He led Hirsch High School to the Illinois state championship in 1973.

1960

Lafayette “Fat” Lever is born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His nickname was a result of his younger brother’s inability to pronounce his full name.

1964

Kenny Walker is born in Roberta, Georgia. He was named Mr. Basketball Georgia in 1982 while starring for Crawford County High School.

1974

Five-time WNBA All-Star Shannon Johnson is born in Hartsville, South Carolina.

1983

Dave Cowens is waived by the Bucks, ending his brief comeback and his Hall of Fame career.

1990

The United States outlasts Puerto Rico 107-105 in overtime in the bronze medal game of the FIBA World Championship in Buenos Aires. Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson is named to the all-tournament team. It’s a third consecutive FIBA Worlds medal for the U.S., and their seventh overall, which placed them second at the time behind Yugoslavia and the U.S.S.R. with eight each.

1991

Liz Cambage is born in London, England to a Nigerian father and Australian mother, with whom she moved to Melbourne as an infant.

1992

Bogdan Bogdanovic is born in Belgrade, Serbia (then Yugoslavia). He’s earned two Olympic medals with the Serbian national team, a silver in 2016 and a bronze in 2024.

1993

Willie Cauley-Stein is born in Spearville, Kansas, a city with a total area of just 0.6 miles and a population of 791.

2004

Lisa Leslie scores 25 points and Tina Thompson adds 18 points and seven rebounds as the United States easily defeats South Korea 80-57 in group stage play at the Athens Olympics.

2008

Dwight Howard leads the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds as the United States men’s team closes out the group stage undefeated at the Beijing Olympics with a 106-57 victory over Germany. Dirk Nowitzki finishes with 14 points and eight rebounds in what would turn out to be his final Olympic appearance.
