Sean Elliott undergoes surgery to receive a transplanted kidney from his older brother due to his own kidney failing as a result of a rare disease. Upon his comeback late in the ’99-’00 season, Elliott becomes the first major pro athlete to return to their sport following a kidney transplant procedure.

Les Hunter is born in Nashville, Tennessee. He was teammates at Pearl High School with Vic Rouse, and the duo matriculated together at Loyola-Chicago, leading the school to a national title in 1963.

James Donaldson is born in Heachem, England, where his father was stationed at a U.S. Air Force base.
1978
George McGinnis is traded from the 76ers to the Nuggets in exchange for Ralph Simpson and Bobby Jones, who becomes a key component of Philly’s 1983 title team.

Seven-time WNBA All-Star Candice Dupree is born in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
1988
Moses Malone becomes one of the NBA’s first unrestricted free agents, signing a contract with the Hawks. Malone had spent the prior two seasons with the Bullets.
2004
Lisa Leslie leads the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the United States defeats the Czech Republic 80-61 in Olympics group stage play in Athens.
2008
A much-hyped group stage match-up at the Beijing Olympics turns out to be a one-sided affair, as the United States men’s wins easily over Spain, 119-82. LeBron James leads the Americans with 18 points and eight assists, while Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade score 16 each. Pau Gasol has a quiet game against his NBA compatriots, finishing with just 13 points and committing five turnovers. In other action, Yao Ming finishes with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the host Chinese team to a 59-55 upset over Dirk Nowitzki and Germany.
2009
Iran defeats China 70-52 in the FIBA Asia Cup final in Tianjin, China. Hamed Haddadi is named tournament MVP for the second straight time. Jordan wins its first ever Asia Cup medal, a bronze, with an 80–66 victory over Lebanon.
2019
Joe Tsai purchases the Brooklyn Nets from Mikhail Prokhorov for a record $3.3 billion.
