A U.S. Olympic team with NBA players loses for the first time; Tim Donaghy pleads guilty in court; Portland wins the first ever NBA play-in game

2004

For the first time since NBA players began participating with the national team, the United States loses in Olympics competition, a 92-73 defeat at the hands of Puerto Rico in the group stage in Athens. Carlos Arroyo is the star for the Puerto Ricans, with 24 points and seven assists. In other group stage action, two other NBA/FIBA legends make their Olympics debut: Manu Ginobili finishes with 27 points, leading Argentina to an 83-82 victory over Yugoslavia, while Pau Gasol has 21 points and 10 rebounds in an 83-53 Spain win over China.


1955

Kenny Carr is born in Washington, D.C. He was teammates with Adrian Dantley at DeMatha Catholic, playing under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten.

1975

Kara Wolters is born in Natick, Massachusetts. Her father, William, was a star player at Boston College and an NBA draftee while her mother, Liz, is a Massachusetts high school scoring record holder.

1982

The ninth FIBA World Championship gets underway in Bogota, Colombia. The United States, led by Doc Rivers, Mitchell Wiggins, and Antoine Carr, defeat China 96-73 on the opening day. Other notable games include defending champions Yugoslavia cruising past Czechoslovakia 101-80, and a 17-year-old Arvydas Sabonis scoring 10 points in his FIBA Worlds debut as the Soviet Union defeat the Ivory Coast 129-80.

1988

Boban Marjanovic is born in Zajecar, Serbia (then Yugoslavia). He has represented the Serbian national team numerous times, most notably in their silver medal performance at the 2017 EuroBasket.

1990

Michael Cooper is waived by the Lakers, ending a 12-year NBA career all with Los Angeles that included five championships and one Defensive Player of the Year award. Cooper then played one more season in the Italian Serie A before retiring to become a coach.

After 10-and-a-half seasons with the Nuggets, Alex English signs as a free agent with the Mavericks and announces that the ’90-’91 season will be his last.

Jose Ortiz and Fico Lopez lead Puerto Rico to a stunning 81-79 upset of the United States during the second round at the FIBA World Championship in Buenos Aires. Despite the result, both the U.S. and Puerto Rico advance to the knockout round, along with Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union.

1991

Puerto Rico upsets the United States 73-68 in the semifinals of the Pan American Games in Havana. The Americans were without their top scorer, Jim Jackson, who suffered a fractured foot during a quarterfinals round win over Uruguay.

1996

NBA champion Bruce Brown is born in Boston, Massachusetts.

1998

Bruno Fernando is born in Luanda, Angola. In 2019, he became the first Angolan player in NBA history, when he debuted with the Hawks.

2007

Tim Donaghy appears in federal court and pleads guilty to wire fraud, with allegations that the former NBA referee had used his status to alter game outcomes for point spread control purposes. He was eventually sentenced to 15 months in prison.

2020

The NBA concludes its seeding games for the ’19-’20 season in “The Bubble” in Orlando with the institution of a play-in game for the #8 seed in the Western Conference. The Trail Blazers defeat the Grizzlies 126-122 to advance to the playoffs. Damian Lillard leads Portland with 31 points and 10 assists, while Jusuf Nurkic adds 22 points and 21 rebounds. Memphis’ Ja Morant ends his rookie season with a 35 point, eight assist performance.

With the conclusion of the ’19-’20 regular season, the NBA announces Damian Lillard of the Trail Blazers as the first ever winner of the Player of the Seeding Games award.
