2016

One of the all-time great Olympics basketball matches takes place in the Rio group stage phase, with the host Brazilians losing 111-107 to heated rival Argentina in double overtime in front of a raucous crowd. Led by 24 points and 10 rebounds from Nene, Brazil held a sizable lead late in regulation and the first overtime but could not hold on in either case. Andres Nocioni had 37 points and 11 rebounds for Argentina and hit a game-tying shot at the end of the fourth quarter.


1940

Longtime NBA and ABA coach Bill Musselman is born in Wooster, Ohio.

1948

With a roster split between star players from the defending NCAA champions Kentucky and the AAU squad Phillips 66ers, the United States men’s team wins gold at the Olympics in London, defeating France 65-21 in the gold medal game. Don Barksdale becomes the first Black American to participate in an Olympics basketball tournament and first to win gold. Brazil defeats Mexico 52-47 in the bronze medal game.

1990

DeMarcus Cousins is born in Mobile, Alabama. He was a Parade All-American in 2009 while starring for LeFlore Magnet High School in Mobile.

1994

The United States cruises past Greece 97-58 in the semifinals of the FIBA World Championship in Toronto, while Russia and Croatia continue their heated rivalry from the U.S.S.R.-Yugoslavia days, with the Russians prevailing 66-64.

1999

WNBA All-Star Ezi Magbegor is born in Wellington, New Zealand. She gained Australian nationality when her family relocated there during her childhood.

2020

Devin Booker scores 27 points as the Suns defeat the Mavericks 128-102 to finish their run in “The Bubble” with a perfect 8-0 record. But they just miss out on the play-in game to the Grizzlies, who defeat the Bucks 119-106 to clinch their spot. It extends Phoenix’s drought to 10 straight seasons without a playoff appearance.
