2004

The rebuilding Lakers make a rare trade with their bitter, cross-country rivals, sending Gary Payton to the Celtics, along with Rick Fox and a first round pick, in exchange for Chucky Atkins, Jumaine Jones, and Chris Mihm. Payton would spend just one season with Boston before signing with the Heat and finally winning an elusive championship at the end of his career.

NCAA coaching legend Hank Iba is born in Easton, Missouri.

1951

ABA All-Star Mike Green is born in McComb, Mississippi.

1958

Darwin Cook is born in Los Angeles, California. He played basketball at Crenshaw High School under the legendary coach Willie E. West, Jr.

1960

Dale Ellis is born in Marietta, Georgia. He played on the Marietta High School basketball team alongside his twin brother, Darryl.

1962

Having recently re-located from Syracuse to Philadelphia, the Nationals officially change their name to the 76ers.

1965

David Robinson is born in Key West, Florida. His family moved frequently due to his father being in the U.S. Navy but eventually settled in Manassas, Virginia, where David played basketball for Osbourn Park High School.

1967

The United States finishes a dominant run at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg by defeating Mexico 93-74 to clinch a gold medal. Jo Jo White led the American team in scoring while Wes Unseld dominated at center. Mexico wins the silver medal and Panama earns bronze.

1974

Alvin Williams is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played basketball at the prestigious Germantown Academy, where his classmates included actor Bradley Cooper.

1983

In an epic battle in the gold medal game of the FIBA World Championship for Women in Rio de Janiero, Uljana Semjonova and the Soviet Union overcome Cheryl Miller and the United States, 84-72. It’s the Soviet’s sixth consecutive FIBA title in tournaments in which they participated, a streak that the U.S. would finally break in the rematch in 1986.

1984

Detlef Schrempf and Germany give the United States a surprisingly difficult battle in the quarterfinals of the Olympics in Los Angeles, with the U.S. ultimately winning 78-67. Schrempf, who was just coming off his junior year at the University of Washington, finishes with 16 points, while Steve Alford leads the Americans with 17 points.

1992

The U.S. men’s team cruises past Lithuania 127-76 in the Olympics semifinals in Barcelona. Nine of the 12 American players finish in double-digit scoring, led by Michael Jordan’s 21 points. Sarunas Marciulionis leads the Lithuanians with 20 points while Arvydas Sabonis struggles, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting. The other semifinal is a thriller, with Drazen Petrovic hitting the go-ahead free throws with nine seconds left to give Croatia a 75-74 victory over the Unified Team (Russia).

2003

For just the second time in Pan American Games history, the United States fails to medal, as they lose 76-70 to Puerto Rico in the bronze medal game in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Brazil earns its second consecutive gold medal with an 89-62 win over the host Dominicans. Despite being coached by Tom Izzo and featuring NCAA stars Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, and Andre Barrett, the U.S. lost in three of its five games.

2012

28 points from Kevin Durant helps the United States men’s team closes out group play with a perfect 5-0 record by defeating Argentina 126-97 at the Olympics in London. Chris Paul adds 17 points and seven assists, while Manu Ginobili leads Argentina with 16 points. In other action, host Great Britain picks up its first win ever in Olympic competition, 90-58 over China, but fails to qualify for the quarterfinals.

2016

Group play gets underway in Rio in the men’s tournament of the Olympics, with the United States easily defeating China 119-62, behind 25 points from Kevin Durant. In other action, Patty Mills drops 21 points in an 87-66 Australia victory over France, while Venezuela makes its Olympics debut, losing 86-62 against Serbia.

2024

The quarterfinals round of the men’s tournament at the Paris Olympics is highlighted by the host French team upsetting Canada 82-73. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 27 points for the Canadians, whom many experts considered the second best team in the tournament after the United States. In the other quarterfinal games, Devin Booker leads the U.S. with 18 points in a 122-87 victory over Brazil, Germany defeats Greece 76-63 and Serbia wins an overtime thriller over Australia, 85-80.
