Danny Ferry signs with Italian club Il Messaggero to avoid suiting up for the Clippers franchise that had selected him second overall in the 1989 NBA Draft. It was an unprecedented move by the Duke All-American, who was concerned with the management of the Clippers franchise and the presence of a similarly sized and skilled player on the roster in Danny Manning. Ferry averaged 23 points per game in his one Serie A season before returning to the NBA after the Clippers traded him to the Cavaliers.
1942
ABA legend Bob Netolicky is born in San Francisco, California.
1952
Coached by Kansas’ Phog Allen and led on the court by his star Jayhawks player Clyde Lovellette, the United States men’s team earns gold at the Olympics in Helsinki by defeating the Soviet Union 36-25 in the gold medal game.
1969
Cedric Ceballos is born in Maui, Hawaii. He was second cousins with Kobe Bryant, as their respective grandfathers were brothers.
1990
Skylar Diggins-Smith is born in South Bend, Indiana. She led Washington High School to the Indiana state title in 2007.
1992
The United States men’s team finishes the group stage portion of the Olympics in Barcelona with a 122-81 victory over Spain. Charles Barkley leads the Americans with 17 points, while Patrick Ewing adds 14 points and 10 rebounds. In their five group stage wins, the U.S. averaged 116 points per game, while holding their opponents to just 70 points per game. Amongst the players who take the floor for Spain is Santiago Aldama, whose son Santi eventually becomes an NBA player.
1995
NBA All-Star Kristaps Porzingis is born in Liepaja, Latvia.
1996
The United States women’s team rolls past Australia 93-71 in the Olympics semifinals in Atlanta. Lisa Leslie finishes with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Katrina McClain adds 18 points and 15 rebounds. In the other semifinal, Brazil defeats Ukraine 81-60, behind 24 points and six assists from Paula.
2001
Hakeem Olajuwon is traded from the Rockets to the Raptors in exchange for a first round pick and a second round pick, ending a 17 year run in Houston.
2005
One of the largest trades in NBA history features five teams (Celtics, Grizzlies, Heat, Hornets, and Jazz) and 12 players, including Antoine Walker, James Posey, and Jason Williams, who are traded to the Heat and become key components of the team’s subsequent 2006 title run.
2012
In a group stage match of the Olympics tournament in London, the United States men’s team defeats Nigeria 156-73. It’s the largest margin of victory for a U.S. team in any Olympic game, while Carmelo Anthony sets the single game scoring record with 37 points.
2024
In Olympics men’s group stage play in Paris, Germany upsets the host French team 85-71. Dennis Schroder and and Franz Wagner lead the Germans with 26 points each. Both teams qualify for the knockout round and just a few days later, France would win a rematch in the semifinals.
