2018

Liz Cambage sets the WNBA single game scoring record with 53 points for the Dallas Wings in a 104-87 victory over the New York Liberty. Riquana Williams had been the previous record holder with a 51-point game in 2013, while Cambage’s mark was later tied by A’ja Wilson in 2023.


1932

Red Kerr is born in Chicago, Illinois. Though his NBA playing career took him to Philadelphia and Baltimore, Kerr eventually returned to Chicago, first as coach of the Bulls and then later as an iconic broadcaster.

Slick Leonard is born in Terre Haute, Indiana. He eventually became synonymous with basketball in the state of Indiana, as a player, coach, and broadcaster.

1942

Connie Hawkins is born in Brooklyn, New York, where he became a playground legend at Rucker Park as a teenager.

1971

NCAA Player of the Year Calbert Cheaney is born in Evansville, Indiana.

1986

In the knockout round semifinals of the FIBA World Championship in Madrid, David Robinson leads the United States to a 96-80 victory over Oscar Schmidt and Brazil, while Arvydas Sabonis and the Soviets win a 91-90 thriller over Yugoslavia in overtime.

1996

Kazaam is released in theaters. Starring Shaquille O’Neal as a genie, the film is poorly received by critics and fails to make up its budget at the box office.

1997

OG Anunoby is born in London, England. When OG was five, his professor father accepted a new job, relocating the family to Jefferson City, Missouri.

2000

Tina Thompson finishes with 13 points and 11 rebounds and is named MVP as she leads the Western Conference to a 73-61 victory over the East at the WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix.

2002

Chauncey Billups signs as a free agent with the Pistons. He had spent the prior two seasons with the Timberwolves.

2017

Paul Pierce signs a ceremonial contract with the Celtics in order to officially retire as a member of the team. Pierce spent his first 15 seasons with Boston, becoming the franchise’s second all-time leading scorer, before short stints with the Nets, Wizards, and Clippers at the end of his career.
