Sandhi Ortiz-Del Valle is the first woman pro ref; the U.S. takes gold at the Pan Am Games; Dwyane Wade signs with his hometown Bulls

1991

Sandhi Ortiz-Del Valle becomes the first woman ever to referee a men’s professional basketball game in the United States, when she officiates a USBL game between the Philadelphia Spirit and the New Haven Skyhawks. Her jersey and whistle from the game were subsequently donated to the Naismith Hall of Fame. It would take six more years for the NBA officiating gender barrier to be broken by Violet Palmer.


1941

Two-time NBA All-Star Archie Clark is born in Conway, Arkansas.

1972

Khalid Reeves is born in Queens, New York. After his playing career ended, he became an assistant coach at his alma mater, Christ the King Regional High School in Queens.

1979

Led by 21 points from an 18-year-old Isiah Thomas, the United States defeats Puerto Rico 113-94 in the gold medal game of the Pan American Games in San Juan. The U.S. team was coached by Bob Knight and also featured strong performances from Mike Woodson, Kevin McHale, and Ralph Sampson, who, like Thomas, was still a high schooler at the time. Brazil earns the bronze medal.

1990

Damian Lillard is born in Oakland, California. His choice of jersey #0 is, in part, representative of “O” for his hometown.

1991

Derrick Favors is born in Atlanta, Georgia. He led South Atlanta High School to the Georgia state title in 2009 and was named Mr. Basketball USA.

1992

Tobias Harris is born in Islip, New York. He was named Mr. New York Basketball in 2010 while starring for Long Island Lutheran High School.

1996

Dikembe Mutombo signs as a free agent with the Hawks. The defensive stalwart had spent his first five NBA seasons with the Nuggets. He would go on to earn back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards in his first two seasons in Atlanta.

2002

Lisa Leslie becomes the first three-time WNBA All-Star MVP, earning the award by finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds in an 81-76 Western Conference win over the East in Washington, D.C. Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings make their All-Star debuts, both as starters.

2005

JuJu Watkins is born in Los Angeles, California. She was classmates at Sierra Canyon High School with Bronny James and was named Ms. Basketball California twice.

2007

MVP Cheryl Ford leads the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Eastern Conference defeats the West 103-99 at the WNBA All-Star Game in Washington, D.C.

2016

Dwyane Wade signs a free agent contract with his hometown Bulls, after 13 seasons and three championships with the Heat. Wade would eventually return to Miami for the ’18-’19 season before retiring.

2023

Jewell Lloyd sets the WNBA All-Star Game scoring record with 31 points and is named MVP of the game in Las Vegas. The record had previously been 30 points and was held by Maya Moore and Kelsey Plum, who scores 30 again in this game in a losing effort.
