2013

The Celtics trade Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Nets, along with a first round pick and a second round pick, in exchange for Keith Bogans, MarShon Brooks, Kris Humphries, Kris Joseph, Gerald Wallace, and four first round picks. The move signals the end of the “Big Three” era for Boston and the franchise soon after rebuilds around the acquired draft picks, one of which is used on Jaylen Brown.


1938

John “Ray” Scott is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While competing for West Philadelphia High School, he played against Wilt Chamberlain in the 1955 Philadelphia public school championship game.

1943

Paul Silas is born in Prescott, Arkansas. Four of his cousins – June, Bonnie, Anita, and Ruth – became the highly successful R&B vocal group The Pointer Sisters.

1971

Bill Sharman is hired as head coach of the Lakers, replacing the fired John Mullaney. Sharman would soon after be sued by his former team, the Utah Stars of the ABA, for breach of contract, but stayed on as Lakers coach, leading them to the ’71-’72 title.

1972

Travis Best is born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He led Springfield Central High School to the Massachusetts state title in 1991 and set a state scoring record with 81 points in a single game.

1988

NBA veteran Patrick Beverley is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1998

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is born in Toronto, Canada. His mother, Charmaine Gilgeous, competed for Antigua and Barbuda in athletics at the 1992 Olympics.

2006

The seventh WNBA All-Star Game takes place at Madison Square Garden and makes history, as the Eastern Conference wins for the first time, defeating the West 98-82. Katie Smith is named MVP. It’s also the inaugural WNBA Three-Point Contest, which takes place before the All-Star Game and is won by Dawn Staley.

2013

Jrue Holiday is traded from the 76ers to the Pelicans in exchange for Nerlens Noel and a first round pick.
