1975

Reigning ABA league MVP George McGinnis leaves for the NBA one year before the merger, signing a free agency contract with the 76ers. McGinnis, who had spent his entire career up to that point with the Pacers, had previously signed with the Knicks but that contract was voided by the league as the Sixers owned his draft rights. Though McGinnis did not quite live up to the hype in Philadelphia, he was a two-time All-Star for the Sixers.

LeBron James officially joins the Heat, as part of a sign-and-trade in which the Cavaliers receive two first round picks and two second round picks. Chris Bosh is also sent to the Heat on the same day as part of a sign-and-trade with the Raptors, who receive two first round picks.

Forgoing a traditional All-Star Game due to a season break for the upcoming FIBA World Cup, the WNBA instead stages an exhibition game between the U.S. women’s national team and WNBA All-Stars in Connecticut. Sylvia Fowles is the leading scorer with 23 points as Team USA wins 99-72.

Kelsey Plum ties the WNBA All-Star Game scoring record with 30 points and is named MVP as she leads a team captained by A’ja Wilson to a 134-112 victory over a team captained by Breanna Stewart. Chicago hosts the event for the first time. Plum was making her All-Star debut, as does Sabrina Ionescu. Sue Bird extends her record with her 13th and final All-Star appearance.
