Kevin Durant publishes a letter on the Players’ Tribune website announcing his intension to sign a free agency contract with the Warriors, citing his desire for “growth as a player.” Durant officially joined Golden State three days later, signing a two-year contract for $54.3 million. In his first two seasons with the Warriors, he won back-to-back Finals MVP awards.
1965
Twin brothers Horace and Harvey Grant are born in Augusta, Georgia. When they played together at Sparta High School, their coach forced them to wear different colored headbands so he could tell them apart.
1974
Adrian Griffin is born in Wichita, Kansas. He led Wichita East High School to a Kansas state title in 1992 and was inducted in the state’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
1986
Omer Asik is born in Bursa, Turkiye. Before coming to the NBA, his pro career started in his home country with the club Fenerbahce S.K.
1993
Host nation Germany wins its first ever EuroBasket title, defeating Russia 71-70 in the Final in Munich. Christian Welp leads the Germans with 18 points and is named tournament MVP. It’s the culmination of a thrilling upset run through the tournament for Germany, who had previously eked out close wins over Spain in the quarterfinals and Greece in the semifinals. Croatia defeats Greece for the bronze medal.
2000
Cynthia Cooper of the Houston Comets announces her retirement from the WNBA at the conclusion of the season, ending a four year career that included four championships, four Finals MVP awards, two league MVP awards, and three scoring titles.
2003
An arrest warrant is issued by Eagle County, Colorado for Kobe Bryant on alleged sexual assault charges. Bryant immediately surrenders to police, consents to a rape kit test and polygraph test, and is subsequently released on bail.
