1980

Featuring a memorable performance by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Airplane! is released in theaters. The normally demure Abdul-Jabbar is a breakout star in the film, portraying deadpan pilot Roger Murdock. The film is a critical and box office success, finishing fourth in the U.S. in total gross in 1980 and spawning a (Kareem-less) sequel.


1931

Larry Costello is born in Minoa, New York. Before leading the Bucks to the 1971 championship, his first head coaching job was at his alma mater, East Syracuse-Minoa High School.

1949

NCAA All-American Curtis Rowe is born in Bessemer, Alabama.

1957

Purvis Short is born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A Mississippi state champion in high school, Short stayed local and played college ball at the HBCU Jackson State, where he became the school’s all-time scoring leader.

1961

Clark Kellogg is born in Cleveland, Ohio. Considered one of the greatest prep players in Cleveland history, Kellogg scored 51 points in the 1979 state championship game, albeit in a losing effort.

1990

WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumibe is born in Tomball, Texas.

1994

Derrick White is born in Parker, Colorado. He was part of the first graduating class at Legend High School and in 2023 was the first player honored by the school with a jersey retirement.

1995

Yugoslavia wins one of the most thrilling and controversial EuroBasket Finals of all time, defeating Lithuania 96-90 in Athens. Lithuania leads for most of the game until a series of questionable calls leads to their stars Arvydas Sabonis and Rimas Kurtinaitis fouling out, followed by a furious, late comeback from Yugoslavia to win. Sarunas Marciulionis scores 32 points in the losing effort and is named tournament MVP. He’s joined by his countryman Sabonis, Yugoslavia’s Vlade Divac, and Croatia’s Toni Kukoc on the all-tournament team. Croatia defeats Greece 73-68 in the bronze medal game, then walk off the podium during the medal ceremony in protest of the Yugoslav Wars.

2007

Former #1 overall pick and NBA All-Star Jimmy Walker passes away at age 63. His estranged son, Jalen Rose, gives a eulogy at the funeral, lamenting their lack of opportunity to meet.

2008

SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett reaches an agreement on the lawsuit filed by the city of Seattle, clearing the way for him to re-locate the franchise to Oklahoma City.

2024

Jayson Tatum becomes the first NBA player to ever sign a contract over $300 million, a record setting five-year, $314 million super-max extension with the Celtics. It broke a record set by his teammate, Jaylen Brown, just one year prior.
