Duke makes NBA Draft history; Bill Russell officially retires as a player; Chris Paul leads the Suns to the NBA Finals

1999

Duke becomes the first school ever to have four players drafted in the first round of the same NBA Draft, with Elton Brand going to the Clippers at #1 (and eventually winning Rookie of the Year), Trajan Langdon to the Cavaliers at #11, Corey Maggette to the Magic at #13, and William Avery to the Timberwolves at #14. Another notable pick is Argentinean Manu Ginobili going to the Spurs with the second to last pick of the draft, #57 overall.


1925

Fred Schaus is born in Newark, Ohio. He led Newark High School to the Ohio state championship in 1943.

1943

ABA All-Star Warren Davis is born in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

1957

The Soviet Union kick off a streak of eight consecutive EuroBasket titles by clinching the tournament in Sofia with a 60-57 win over Bulgaria. The host Bulgarians finish in second place, followed by Czechoslovakia in third.

1965

Mitch Richmond is born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was childhood friends with Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Michael Irvin.

1969

Bill Russell officially announces his retirement from the NBA, after 13 seasons and 11 championships with the Celtics.

1985

NBA champion Trevor Ariza is born in Miami, Florida.

1988

Joe Mazzulla is born in Johnston, Rhode Island. He was part of three Rhode Island state title winners with Bishop Hendricken High School.

1993

The Magic select Chris Webber from Michigan with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, then immediately trade his draft rights to the Warriors in exchange for the draft rights to the third overall pick (Penny Hardaway) and three future first round picks.

2017

Stephen Curry becomes the first $200 million man in NBA history by signing a five-year, $201 million extension with the Warriors. It sets the record for largest contract in league history but that would be broken just a few months later by Russell Westbrook and the Thunder.

2021

Chris Paul scores 41 points to lead the Suns to a 130-103 victory over the Clippers in game six of the Western Conference Finals, finishing the series and clinching Phoenix’s first NBA Finals appearance in 28 years.
