2006

The NBA league office announces that the official league ball as provided by Spalding will be changed for the ’06-’07 season to a new synthetic composite. Backlash from the players is nearly immediate, eventually forcing David Stern to reverse course and revert back to the original ball style mid-season.


1944

NBA All-Star Bob Rule is born in Riverside, California.

1981

Joe Johnson is born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was named Arkansas Mr. Basketball in 1999, after leading Little Rock Central High School to the state title.

1982

Thanks to a savvy trade two years prior with the Cavaliers, the defending champion Lakers are able to select James Worthy from North Carolina as the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Other notable selections include Dominique Wilkins going #3 to the Jazz but refusing to sign with the team.

1984

“Conan the Destroyer” is released in theaters. A sequel to “Conan the Barbarian,” the film has one of the most eclectic casts in movie history, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones, Andre the Giant, and Wilt Chamberlain making his first, and ultimately only, film appearance.

1991

Kawhi Leonard is born in Los Angeles, California. He was teammates with Tony Snell at Martin Luther King High School and named Mr. Basketball California in 2009.

Yugoslavia wins its second consecutive EuroBasket, defeating Italy 88-73 in the Final in Rome. The Yugoslavian roster is headlined by Dino Rada, tournament MVP Toni Kukoc, and Vlade Divac, who becomes the first active NBA player allowed to participate under the new FIBA rules. Spain defeats France for the bronze medal.

1992

John Stockton fractures his leg during a United States victory over Canada in the Tournament of the Americas, a qualifying tournament for the upcoming Olympics. With Stockton sidelined for at least six weeks, the “Dream Team” brass had to debate adding a replacement player but ultimately settled on keeping Stockton, who missed the first four Olympics games.

1994

Glenn Robinson (Purdue) is the #1 overall pick of the Bucks in the NBA Draft, while eventual Rookie of the Year co-winners Jason Kidd (California) and Grant Hill go second and third to the Mavericks and Pistons, respectively.

1998

NBA champion Michael Porter, Jr. is born in Indianapolis, Indiana.

2004

Tracy McGrady is traded from the Magic to the Rockets, along with Juwan Howard and Tyronn Lue, in exchange for Kelvin Cato, Steve Francis, and Cuttino Mobley.
