The Wizards take a chance on Kwame Brown; Dennis Johnson is traded to the Celtics; the Bucks get a draft steal in Giannis

2001

For the first time ever, the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft is a player with no college experience, as the Wizards select high school phenom Kwame Brown. Despite his obvious talent and playing under the tutelage of team president Michael Jordan, Brown never materializes as a star player for Washington. Eventual Rookie of the Year winner Pau Gasol is drafted third overall by the Hawks, who then trade his rights to the Grizzlies.


1960

Craig Hodges is born in Park Forest, Illinois. He eventually returned to his hometown to coach basketball at his alma mater, Rich East High School.

1964

Chuck Person is born in Brantley, Alabama. He was named after his mother’s favorite television star, Chuck Connors from The Rifleman.

1983

Dennis Johnson, along with a first round pick, is traded from the Suns to the Celtics in exchange for Rick Robey and two second round picks. Johnson would go on to serve as a key component of two Celtics title teams

1989

For the first time ever, the NBA Draft is limited to its modern incarnation of two rounds, as a result of collective bargaining agreement negotiations with the Players Association.

1990

The Nets select Derrick Coleman (Syracuse) with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, followed by the SuperSonics taking Gary Payton (Oregon State) with the second pick.

1995

Monte Morris is born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He led Flint Beecher High School to back-to-back state titles and was named Mr. Basketball Michigan in 2013.

2013

One of the weakest overall classes in NBA Draft history does produce one all-time superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo, who falls to the Bucks at the #15 pick. Meanwhile, top pick Anthony Bennett (UNLV) of the Cavaliers goes on to play just parts of four NBA seasons.
